Though he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California and worked as a petrochemical engineer, fate had other plans โ€” a talent scout discovered him while bodybuilding in the early 1980s, leading to his first screen appearance in Diana Rossโ€™s 1982 music video โ€œMuscles.โ€

Birmingham soon dedicated himself fully to acting, studying under renowned coaches Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. He made his TV debut in 1986 with the series Riptide and later appeared in Body & Soul (2002) and Steven Spielbergโ€™s epic miniseries Into the West (2005). Audiences today know him best for roles like Billy Black in The Twilight Saga and the Texas Ranger in Hell or High Water, where he starred alongside Jeff Bridges.

With decades of diverse performances, Gil Birmingham continues to captivate audiences and honor his Native American heritage through every role he takes on.

Portrait of Joseph Two Bulls, Dakota Sioux, ca 1900

๐Ÿ“ธ 1/20

This photo marks the first in a series of photos I"ve made of Indigenous and First Nations people who lived a century ago in America. I hope you look forward to the next 19 days!

LakศŸรณta or Dakhรณta translates to mean "friend" or "ally" referring to the alliances between the bands. โ€œSiouxโ€ is a term that refers to the Oฤhรฉthi ล akรณwiล‹ (Oceti Sakowin) meaning โ€œSeven Council Firesโ€. They are the confederacy of Great Plains Tribes.

The name "Sioux" was adopted in English by the 1760s from French. In the early 1700s French fur trappers moved further inland toward the west where they came upon a new group of natives whom they did not know previously, so upon their return to the east they asked Chippewa natives who spoke Ojibwe if they knew what these new people were. The Ojibwe response was that they were the โ€œNadowessiโ€, meaning โ€œlittle snakesโ€. Being French, they added the plural suffix -oux to their name which turned into โ€œNadouessiouxโ€, later shortened to just โ€œSiouxโ€. The Ojibwe were enemies of the Sioux at the time.

In recent times the term โ€œSiouxโ€ is falling out of favour and some of the tribes have formally or informally reclaimed their traditional names.

Today the seven nations that comprise the Oฤhรฉthi ล akรณwiล‹ are as follows, native spelling first, transliteration in parenthesis, English translation in quotes:

LakศŸรณta/Teton:
โ–ธThรญtศŸuล‹waล‹ (Teton) possibly "dwellers on the prairie"

Santee-Sisseton "knife camp" or Eastern Dakota/Dakhรณta:
โ–ธ Bdewรกkaล‹thuล‹waล‹ (Mdewakanton) "Spirit Lake Village" or "people of the mystic lake"
โ–ธWaศŸpรฉkhute (Wahpekute) "Leaf Archers"
โ–ธSisรญthuล‹waล‹ (Sisseton) "swamp/lake/fish scale village"
โ–ธWaศŸpรฉthuล‹waล‹ (Wahpeton) "Leaf Village"

Yankton/Yanktonai or Western Dakota:
โ–ธ Ihรกล‹kthuล‹waล‹ (Yankton) "Village-at-the-end"
โ–ธ Ihรกล‹kthuล‹waล‹na (Yanktonai) "Little village-at-the-end"

A very dapper Taketomi Toshihiko, a Japanese diplomat, seated with his wife in Washington D.C. October 24, 1922

Colored this one since they both just looked sooo stylish! I assumed this gentleman and his wife were diplomats on a mission from Japan, given that this photo was taken in Washington D.C.

After a look in old newspapers, it turns out Toshihiko was quite an important figure! This photo was taken the same week he was appointed as secretary of the Japanese Embassy in the US. He took part in The Washington Naval Conference the same year which sought to reduce tensions and limit the naval arms race after World War I.

Later in 1932, he was named counsellor of the Embassy of Japan. None of the newspaper clippings seemed to mention his wifeโ€™s name.

Rollerskating in the Savoy Ballroom, Southside, Chicago, 1941

The Savoy ballroom was opened in 1927, it was heavily funded and its size was unprecedented on the South Side of Chicago with elaborate decor, a triple subfloor, and a checkroom that could accommodate 6,000 hats and coats. Originally featuring primarily Jazz artists, including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Stan Kenton, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Krupa, Woody Herman, the Savoy also hosted other activities, such as boxing, figure skating, and basketball exhibitions featuring the โ€œSavoy Big Fiveโ€, who would later change their name to the Harlem Globetrotters.

From 1927 until 1940, there was continuous music supplied by two bands per night. When one band took a break, the other would go on. During these years, the Savoy was open seven days a week. Although most of the Savoy"s patrons were black, growing numbers of white Chicagoans visited the Savoy.

The Savoy closed in 1948, and was demolished in the early 1970s. The site is now home to the Lou Rawls Theater Cultural Center.
