Think on pleasant things. Deliberately turn your thoughts to something pleasant when the pressures are too intense. And be careful as undisciplined thought quickly sifts back to the unhappy, unsettled mind. The greater part of the time we are victims of our emotions. They play havoc with our peace of mind and are great friends of pessimism. They tell us things are true with such sincerity that we believe them into fact. They convince us things are a certain way and that we cannot remedy them with any amount of effort. But stop where you are and consider what it is you are listening to and how it affects your feelings. Do a turnabout and take the positive route of deliberately replacing thoughts of unhappiness, injustices, and misunderstandings with the thought that these are merely chariots to carry us past all that has withheld freedom.

Even in July there are lovely cool places in the woods. May apples spread their leaves to shade the tiny blooms of sweet William and moss rich and green and cushiony gathers in rocky areas. Most wet-weather springs have drawn back into the earth and an occasionally tiny trickle waters the wild plum and invites the goldfinch to bathe. It is a haven on a very warm day for both red and gray squirrels to romp and play - but not with each other as they are natural enemies. Get away from the rise in temperatures and let mother nature soothe your brow with songs of the meadowlark and the field sparrow. It is good medicine - very good medicine. ~ What I say I want you to take to heart. ~

To be truly beautiful, a precious stone must be cut precisely, polished expertly, and set in the right mounting. It was no less worthy in its original state, but its hidden beauty was where we could not see it. People are precious stones as well. They may be covered by a rough exterior, but we sense the glow - even before they are polished and shaped. With so much emphasis on how we look, there is always work to do, and it isn't all on the outside. Pettiness is the ugly bubble in an otherwise lovely diamond. With it we can change our world. We can take a tiny seed and give it careful attention and reap a hundred fold. We can take a little idea and give it our attention and build it into a fortune. A smile is a small thing. Smile once at someone in passing and three will return the smile. Smiling is so contagious that it moves from person to person until a hundred smiling faces are the result of one. A thought is a small thing. One thought inspires another and another until a mental image is formed. From that mental image blueprints are drawn. And from those blueprints worlds are built. Hope is a small thing. One tiny glimmer of hope can lift us out of the deepest pit of darkness. One whisper of encouragement will help us to know that as long as there's hope there is an excellent chance. A wish is a small thing. Like a little prayer, it climbs the steps to an idea that makes a smile and gives us hope to make our wishes come true. The direction of our live is more dependent on our own thoughts and words that on what the government does and how it affects the economy. Yes, we do live in the system, but that doesn't mean we have to get down and struggle for every dollar nor fret about who will take care of us. There's no less money in the world than there has ever been, but by design we have developed a very negative view that if everybody else is having a struggle, then we must struggle too It is buying into the same club that says age means sickness. No, it doesn't. Many older people are not sick at all, because they never planned to be. What are our plans? It pays to know. ~ Indians living close to nature and nature's ruler are not living in darkness. ~

Born June 22, 1952, on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, Mr. Greene is a 73 year old FIRST NATIONS Canadian actor who belongs to the ONEIDA tribe. He has worked on stage, in film, and in TV productions in Canada, the U.K., and the U.S.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his 1990 performance in "Dances with Wolves". Other films you may have seen him in include Thunderheart, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, the Green Mile, and Wind River. Graham Greene graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in 1974 & immediately began performing in professional theatre in Toronto and England, while also working as an audio technician for area rock bands.
