"Always remember you are Indian - do things to make your people proud." --Joe Coyhis, STOCKBRIDGE-MUNSEEโ€“ All our choices and decisions will reflect on our people. We need to assume the accountability of honoring people. We must remember to conduct ourselves in a sacred way. Sometimes this is hard. But we must remember we have the assistance of the Spirit World, and we have the principles and values by which we should live written in our hearts. The Creator will help us develop into a strong people if we just learn to depend upon Him. Great Spirit, lead me on the path of the Red Road.

FORSYTH FLOOD, 1918. Walter Dean Jr. captured images of Rosebud County (Montana) during the early decades of the 20th Century. The Courthouse remains a stunning gem.

Rosebud County has 1.5 square miles of land per resident. If the five boroughs of NYC had the same density, they would be populated by just 200 people. Denver would have 100 people; Seattle, 55. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin. PC users can click image to enlarge/clarify.

23 Mฤ€ORI Man, 1860s. The Mฤori of New Zealand often had facial tattoos and sometimes full-body tattooing. The early daguerreotype print by John Cromb was made shortly after 20 years of wars in which Whites gained control of Mฤori lands. DNA research seems to trace Mฤori origins to China, then migration to Formosa and later to Polynesian islands. The Mฤori were New Zealandโ€™s first inhabitants, arriving by canoe from Polynesia about 900 years ago. The source image was the back cover of โ€œOut of Time: Mฤori & the Photographer.โ€

Dignified portraits of conquered indigenous people on any continent were rare during the 1860s. PC users can click image to clarify/enlarge. Text and digital cleaning and sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

For those who have a wait-and-see attitude it is more wait than see. Then they claim it is better to not expect anything than to be disappointed. These people build the same mental images - but they see nothing. Being able to see in the spirit is as necessary as having a blueprint to build a house. The details need to be filled in, finally coming to that completed picture - so vivid and clear that it must come into being. Anything we touch or use was first an image, an idea, in someone's mind. Seeing it and sensing it and loving it is writing an order to receive it. Mental images should never lack from a poor consciousness. Even if it seems impossible, fill it in. Ideas often have miracles of their own. ~ Our fathers gave us many laws, which they learned from their fathers. These laws were good. ~

The longest face and the saddest cry Always seem to come with the question why. Why did you take what belonged to me? It has always been mine, or can't you see That you have no rights, no right to claim, And you did just that, you're to blame For all my unhappiness, all of my tears. Well, perhaps not all, part were my fears. And I suppose if I think I can also say That if I've lost anything, it's really the way That I treated the things that used to be mine. I saw clouds on the days where there was really sunshine, I turned often to darkness instead of the light. I saw all of the wrong, but never the right, And in all honesty I suppose I must say If I've lost anything, I gave it away.

Is there ever a perfect time? A wise mother says there isn't. She advises us to take life by the hand and march right into the middle, and then start digging out the corners. She says not to wait for a perfect time to do anything, because a perfect time never quite makes it. We simply have to go ahead and make it as near perfect as possible. A perfectionist is usually someone who can never find the perfect way, and gives up in futility. But the one who aims at perfection and does not wait for it, is at least moving and there's nothing useless about that. Unless we are moving, we resemble Tennyson's description: "Faultily faultless, icily regular, splendidly null, dead perfection; no more." We have to face life, not under the pressure of perfection, but by pure faith. We have to go on accepting and rejecting as we come to each phase. "For perfection does not exist," said eighteenth century writer Alfred DE Musset. "To understand it is the triumph of human intelligence; to expect to possess it is the most dangerous kind of madness." In the rush of too much to do, we stack up for ourselves things we are going to do, things we ought to do, and things we intend to do. We do first the things of necessity, we take time to think a little about what we ought to do, and the rest is left to good intention. Frequently the good intentions hold the key to our happiness. While we bog down in the necessities of living, the things that mean so much slip away unnoticed. We always expect other people to know that we intended to do this or that, but we must realize they cannot read our good intentions. Good intentions have the same look as nothing at all. And we have to draw our own conclusions as to what our thoughts and feelings are. Only if we express them can we ever hope for others to know what we would like to do, even though circumstances may hinder us. It has been written that intelligent beings have what it takes to surpass themselves. By sensible thought we can actively express our good intentions and this opens the way for fulfillment.
