Most anything has some distortion. Living today is a little like standing in front of a trick mirror that stretches the legs to the size of sticks and puts kneed where ankles should be. What is real? Even nature affords some illusion. Arid desert has mirages of water standing in pools. It looks real, but approach it and it disappears. We must be aware of illusion - of distortion, because some businesses practice it. When our own eyes squint against truth we are creating distortion. If we can't trust ourselves to recognize the truth, who can we trust? ~ I could cheerfully hope that those of another age and generation may not feel the effects of those oppressive measures. ~

Photographer ERWIN E. SMITH worked on the Texas Panhandle’s LS Ranch during 1907. Henry Lyman, left, was the straw boss (supervisor) for the crew Smith was on. The other man was unidentified. Both wore heavy wool pants with a cinch in the back, since it would be years before belt loops became common. They rode saddles without rear cinches. Their bandanas protected against sunburn to the back of the neck. The LS was started in 1880 by Lucien Scott. From 1883-88, the LS had a finishing range in Montana, where cattle grazed before being sold. Click or stretch image below to better see details.

Erwin E. Smith studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The Amon Carter Museum has the Smith negatives. The Carter’s website has miniscule images, reminiscent of 1995 rather than the 21st Century. Having financial assets of $80 million (excluding museum objects), the Carte museum could do better. Gil Birmingham is an American actor of Comanche ancestry, best known for his portrayal of Billy Black in the The Twilight Saga film series.

Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.

𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗱𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴, 1915, at the Miles City (MT) Roundup. In modern bulldogging (steer wrestling), speeds can reach 30 mph. The rider chases a steer, drops from his speeding horse to the steer, and rotates its head by the horns to make it fall to the ground ... all in under 10 seconds! This shot displayed the old-school technique of biting the steer’s lips to make him compliant, allowing the contestant to spread his arms in victory. Within a year of Custer’s defeat in 1876 in Eastern Montana, the Miles City area had its first photographer at Tongue River Cantonment, John H. Fouch, whose historic photos included the first portrait of Nez Perce Chief Joseph. Later, photographers S.J. Morrow, L.A. Huffman (five books have presented his work), and Christian Barthelmess (profiled in "Photographer on an Army Mule"), operated galleries locally.

In 1909, Albert Schlichting opened his Miles City studio at 14 North 8th Street, documenting community growth during the homesteading boom and capturing superb photos of area rodeos. Schlichting closed his Miles City studio in 1945, five years before Dad opened Coffrin Studio.

The source file was a low-res eBay scan of a real photo postcard. Schlichting’s rodeo captures compared well with nationally known photographers. -Gary Coffrin.

𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐃𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞, whose real name is Geswanouth Slahoot, was a Canadian actor, poet, and writer of Indigenous descent. He was born on July 24, 1899, belonging to the Tsleil-Waututh (Salish) tribe, in a settlement near North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He became widely known for his acting career, especially in films portraying Indigenous characters.

Chief Dan George gained further prominence after his role in the classic film "Little Big Man" (1970), where he portrayed a wise, philosophical elder named Old Lodge Skins. Think on pleasant things. Deliberately turn your thoughts to something pleasant when the pressures are too intense. And be careful as undisciplined thought quickly sifts back to the unhappy, unsettled mind. The greater part of the time we are victims of our emotions. They play havoc with our peace of mind and are great friends of pessimism. They tell us things are true with such sincerity that we believe them into fact. They convince us things are a certain way and that we cannot remedy them with any amount of effort. But stop where you are and consider what it is you are listening to and how it affects your feelings. Do a turnabout and take the positive route of deliberately replacing thoughts of unhappiness, injustices, and misunderstandings with the thought that these are merely chariots to carry us past all that has withheld freedom.

A long this time in autumn, we could have a few days of Indian summer. It is a tranquil time of warm sunlight with a bit of haze and soft breezes from the south. This is a token of childhood when bunches of sweet onions were hung on the garden fence to dry and pumpkins and squashes were in colorful piles. We would love this time to last longer - even anticipate that it will. But it is not likely that anything stands still at this time of year. It is too serene, too satisfying not to pass quickly. Maybe it teaches us the give and take of daily life - whether it is the weather or learning to be flexible where people are concerned. There are the pleasant days that we enjoy so much - and then there are those stormy days where we have to hunker down and ride it out. ~ A furious tempest continually sweeps the crown of the mountain....the adventurer.... Even is he escapes (may be) whirled through the air by its fearful blast. ~
