Thoughts are things. Left unguarded we can expect them to rule us with ruthless persistence. Like attracts like. We are what we think. Emerson believed there was something stronger than any material force. It was his belief that thought rules the world. To think positively is sometimes referred to as refusing to face reality. But who is wise enough to determine what reality is, and who can describe it? The things we see and touch are merely objects made up of tiny particles we can't see individually. So it is with reality - tiny thoughts we don't remember thinking, but the result is obviously positive or negative. If we think continually of how sick and nervous, how unhappy and poverty-stricken we are, then we can expect to be so afflicted. Tiny thoughts produce large results. When we've learned to control our thinking, then we have a chance to control our circumstances. Imperfect thoughts, like unsavory characters, can come to anyone's door, but we don't have to let them in. Sometimes we have to look beyond present appearances and see the truth of things, to know that any product is worth only as much as the quality of its materials. We would be wise to put into practice the teachings of Phillippians 4:8. "Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise.....think on these things."

BRONCO BUSTER, 1908. F.M. Corbin worked for the Elliott Outfit, likely within a 40-mile radius of Terry in far Eastern Montana. Cowboy Corbin posed for an Evelyn Cameron portrait while wearing heavy wool California pants in an era when only โ€œhonyockersโ€ wore denim. The vest was typical, worn for its pockets when shirts had none and everyone smoked. The horse had a Cavalry bit and a single-rigged saddle. The chaps were upscale, as were the lady-leg spurs. The revolver had initials that were not the riderโ€™s. The horseโ€™s eye was covered to still the unshod horse.

STEAK, GRIDDLE CAKES, & COFFEE, 1904. Old West photographer L.A. Huffman was at the Bow & Arrow (a/k/a Bow-Gun) Ranch on South Sunday Creek, north of Miles City, Montana. Lee Warren, with plate and cup atop his boots, was the โ€œbroncho buster.โ€ Warren and a few helpers would โ€œtameโ€ six to eight horses per day.

Warren, a short man, tucked his pants into his boots when working. (Click photo to enlarge.) The cowboy to the left had laced boots. The stove at the back of the tent had been unloaded from the chuckwagon. The men were wearing heavy wool California pants, not denim. L.A. Huffman was not a โ€œhold still and face the cameraโ€ ideologue. Starting in 1879, he photographed buffalo hunters at work, preserved portraits of Native warriors who fought at the Little Big Horn, and documented the working life of Montana cowboys. Q: WHY THIS PHOTO?
A: While not a selfie, this 1867 photo shows hints of the photographerโ€™s presence. Footprints from the darkroom wagon toward the camera show the photographer's path. Timothy Oโ€™Sullivan was one of the USA's most important Civil War lensmen. This shot, however, was taken on the sands of Nevada's Carson Desert during the U.S. Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel.

Sullivanโ€™s glass plate negative had to be uniformly coated with a noxious solution, the photo taken before the solution dried, and the plate immediately bathed in his darkroom. Field photography was not an easy endeavor. Miles City photographer L.A. Huffman used the same process, which he loathed, in his earliest photos. After 1880, Kodakโ€™s dry plate negatives rapidly replaced wet plates. Text, digital sharpening, and cropped view to better see detail by Gary Coffrin.

BLACK COWHANDS, 1911. Articles about Black cowhands in the Old West typically include at least one of the eight photos Erwin E. Smith took at the โ€œNegro State Fair,โ€ as it was titled at the time. Held at Bonham in North Texas, the event had four days of races, rodeo events, parades, and a talent show.

Census records of 1860, the year before the start of the Civil War, listed 180,682 slaves in Texas, 30 percent of the stateโ€™s population. Since Texas had been part of Mexico until 1836, many of the early cowboys were also Hispanic. After the War, many non-white cowhands trailed longhorns to various markets, including California. Census records and photographic evidence suggests that few Black cowhands traveled much north of Kansas โ€ฆ and even fewer of those Black cowhands remained on the Northern Plains.
