"...remember and think about the closeness of Wanka-Tanka. If they live in this wisdom, it will give them endless strength and hope." --Fools Crow, LAKOTA– The value of staying close to the Creator is the immediate help we have available to us whenever we need it. I can listen to the whisper of my heart for this is the place He communicates with me. Staying close helps me remember that we are here to serve Him and to help other people. The Grandfathers are my direct access to wisdom. He who has wisdom has everything. If we have wisdom, then we will see our lives become more effective in the areas of jobs, relationships, family, friends and finances. My Creator, today grant me the wisdom to seek Your wisdom. Help me to Walk of the Red Road.

I sat on the pine floor behind her wood range and played with my doll while she sang "Beulah Land" and made biscuits for supper. It was a comforting hour, a time of homecoming, an aroma of baking bread and laughter and sharing what happened during the day. E li is, Grandmother, was a caretaker, a person who fed all who came through the countryside with no hope for supper and no place to sleep. She gathered in family and impressed on them the need to help each other; she asked no favors and gave of all she had. She walks in my memory as surely as she ever walked - and surely she walks with others too. ~ I have not forgotten what you told me, although a long time has passed. I keep it in my memory. ~

Thank God for things that go right. Thank goodness that we come to this place more often than we realize. And thank God that we do not go to pieces when all things do not work together. To be grateful opens the door for more to be grateful about. Nothing is set forever in one direction so that we never have to change. But change is prerequisite to balance - a feared thing that can work miracles if we use it right. Balance is an inside job - the set of our sails, our readiness, our ability to see beyond present circumstances. We make adjustments. We let go of what we cannot change. Then balance - but we have to believe in it. ~ Our fathers were strong, and their power was felt and acknowledged far and wide. ~

As long as there has been a human race there has been someone crying out, "No one understands!" Somewhere along the way communications have broken down and the result is misunderstanding. To be misunderstood is painful. We keep wanting to explain and explain until we get our messages across. Sometimes it is the lack of the wise use of words. Then, it may be an unwilling ear. But whatever the race, the politics, sophisticated or home grown, everyone has the desire to be understood. They want every motive, every mood completely and unquestionably understood. But to be completely understood can also have its rebound. A goddess can turn into a woman, and a hero can slip into a man when only one of their moods is completely understood. Understanding breeds familiarity. Familiarity may not breed contempt, but it can certainly take the edge off the mystery. And, it is mystery that keeps life interesting. In all wisdom, we should worry much less about being completely understood, and make a more diligent effort to understand others. Something dies within us when no one cares. It is a circumstance of our own making when we have failed to give to another the thought and concern that would have helped when it was most needed. Sorrows can be borne because others care. Greatness can be achieved because someone cared. To care is our purpose. Who knows but that these small acts of sympathy and understanding may place another life into the one slot on the jigsaw puzzle of life. If we were all the things we expect of others, the result would be perfection. We would be perfect in forgiveness, faithful ion love, and devoted to the welfare of others. Such excellence has never been accomplished, except that we work continually for it. To work for it, we have to care. And for someone to care is the thing that matters. "Instead of allowing yourself to be so unhappy, just let your love grow as God wants it to grow; seek goodness in others, love more persons more; love them more impersonally, more unselfishly, without thought of return. The return, never fear, will take care of itself." - Henry Drummond

The danger point comes after a victory when we think there are no more battles. How many wars have been fought thinking this is the war that will end all wars? Even in our own private battles we cannot lie back and think we have won the right to peace. We do need to know and remember that we are more than conquerors. It is a life promise, but we have to claim it. Other claims have taken precedence - weariness, lack, sickness - but we are conquerors, even more than conquerors. We are winners and overcomers. Believe it, because it is true, and the more we claim it, the stronger it is. ~ Where is our strength? In the old times we were strong. ~

"The most important thing you can do during the course of the day is to pray." --Joe Coyhis, STOCKBRIDGE-MUNSEE– There are many things we do during the day that are important. There are many places we have to go and there are many things to accomplish. The old ones say, the most important thing we can do is remember to take the time to pray. We should pray every morning and every evening. In this way we can be sure that the Great Spirit is running our lives. With the Great Spirit we are everything but without Him we are nothing. All Warriors know their greatest weapon is prayer. To spend time talking to the Creator is a great honor. Great Spirit, thank You for listening to my prayers.

CUTTING OUT From The Herd, 1907. The action shot was made by Erwin E. Smith at the LS Ranch of Texas. You can almost feel the motion. A couple riders were at the distant right. Click image to enlarge/clarify if using a PC. The print, not in pristine condition, was made 115 years ago. Smith’s 2000 photos from 1905–12 documented all aspects of the cattle industry before the Automobile Age. Text and a bit of digital photo cleaning of image by Gary Coffrin.

– Historical context –
Erwin E. Smith had purchased prints from and was influenced by Montana photographer L.A. Huffman, who began documenting cowboy life on the open range decades before Smith. Huffman’s 1885 set of 40 prints was perhaps the first nationally marketed series to document the working life of cowboys in the Old West.

Smith’s capture was at the LS Ranch near Tascosa on the Texas Panhandle. In traditional photography, there is only ONE original: The negative, which has a greater tonal range and better detail than the prints made from that negative. The well-endowed Amon Carter Museum is sitting on 2000 negatives of Erwin Smith. So far, it has shamefully neglected scanning the negatives and making the photos available online in resolutions appropriate to the 21st Century. Without online access, our youth will never see our history and another generation will die without a chance to enjoy these historic treasures.

At the same time that Erwin E. Smith was documenting a cowboy lifestyle that would soon disappear, Roland Reed and Edward S. Curtis were photographing Native Americans. The Reed and Curtis images emphasized Natives wearing their finest regalia, paying tribute to times before White settlers privatized land ownership and Natives were confined to reservations. Smith showed ranch life as it was … while the scenes of Reed and Curtis honored the past.

Roland Reed’s work rivaled or excelled that of Edward S. Curtis because of his advanced techniques and stunning prints. Reed’s landscape photography anticipated directions that would later be popularized by Ansel Adams.

Contentment happens when our emotions give place to common things that in other times can draw little attention. It is releasing a deep inner peace that heals sadness and lifts a sagging spirit. Contentment is an intensely personal thing, adjusting to different people in its most effective way. It rides a shaft of sunlight to put on the gray bark of a tree, or it rises from laughter, deep and kind. It is nearly always unexpected and settles as softly as a bird lights on a limb. It is a remarkable fact that we simply let contentment happen. Socrates called it a natural wealth, but most have called it a miracle. ~ Kinship with all creatures of the earth, sky and water was a real and active principle. ~
