To be truly beautiful, a precious stone must be cut precisely, polished expertly, and set in the right mounting. It was no less worthy in its original state, but its hidden beauty was where we could not see it. People are precious stones as well. They may be covered by a rough exterior, but we sense the glow - even before they are polished and shaped. With so much emphasis on how we look, there is always work to do, and it isn't all on the outside. Pettiness is the ugly bubble in an otherwise lovely diamond. Bitterness hides sparkle - but careful handling brings out the beautiful facets - and love makes it a treasure. ~ We saw everything the great Spirit's work in almost everything: sun, moon, trees, wind, and mountains. ~

Photographer Johnny Breum posed in the door of Bill Foght's shack at the Northern Pacific tracks near Fallon in Eastern Montana, circa 1910. In view were his bolt-action rifle, pistol with steel-clip holster, and single-rigged saddle and saddlebags tooled in an elaborate checkerboard pattern.
The wooden crate at the base had held T.H Jackson's Common Sense Liniment for horses, guaranteed to cure a wide variety of ailments. The source was low resolution, but work in Photoshop sharpened the image a bit. Please click image to clarify/enlarge. See link in first comment for more photos by Breum. CHEYENNE ARMY SCOUT at Fort Keogh, 1890. The famous illustration was by Frederic Re*****on. Lt. Edward Casey, a West Point graduate, and his Cheyenne Scouts attracted considerable national publicity. Fort Keogh, adjacent to Miles City (Montana), was built in response to Custerโ€™s 1876 Last Stand at the Little Big Horn River in Eastern Montana.

Lt. Edward Casey, while on a solo mission to ask a band of Lakota to return to reservation lands, was killed by Plenty Horses in January 1891. Nine days earlier, the 7th Cavalry had killed 250+ Natives, including many women and children, at the Wounded Knee Massacre. In some cases, unarmed non-combatants were hunted down and killed.

To provide legal grounds to prevent having Army personnel being charged with murder, Plenty Horses was found not guilty of killing Edward Casey because the judge ruled that a state of war existed. Consequently, no 7th Cavalry soldiers ever faced charges. Nineteen soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for actions at Wounded Knee. However gunfire started, the massacre was an American tragedy.

Re*****on excelled in illustrating animals in motion, and was more fascinated by the military than Charlie Russell. Re*****on regularly glorified the USAโ€™s westward expansion by White Euro-Americans into areas previously occupied by Natives.

Several of Re*****onโ€™s illustrations that accompanied Theodore Rooseveltโ€™s accounts of ranching in Dakota Territory precisely copied the perspective and sizing of photographs by L.A. Huffman, my favorite Old West photographer. The prints were likely supplied by Roosevelt himself. Roosevelt had met Huffman at the 1884 Stock Growers Convention in Miles City. President Roosevelt later displayed six large Huffman prints in the White House. Research and a bit of digital sharpening of image by Gary Coffrin.

I SHOULD KNOW BETTER, but here is a photo from 1982. Seated, I had removed my suit coat and tie. My friend Stu Sherman still wore his. We were working for a retail chain of six bicycle stores headquartered in Santa Barbara, and had ended our day at the bicycle industryโ€™s largest trade show in Long Beach.

Stu came to Santa Barbara after receiving his accounting degree from prestigious Duke University. I had finished my graduate work in philosophy at non-prestigious Arizona State. We both went on to better things, but to this day the lad from Springfield (NJ) and the kid from Miles City (MT) remain friends. "Hey, will you cut that pizza into six slices? I don't think I can eat eight slices."

What the WELL-DRESSED BRONC RIDER was wearing, circa 1918. Dick Wilson was wearing his diagonally striped tie, white shirt, angora chaps. The saddle was singe-rigged, lacking a rear cinch. The apparel and gear were typical of the location and the era. Wilson, not a young gent, was probably fanning the bronc for a tougher ride. There was no 8-second rule. The ride ended when the rider was bucked off or when the horse quit bucking.

The horse was Anarchist; the event was the Miles City (Montana) Round-Up. The blurred outer-perimeter fence was surrounded by automobiles. Ralph R. Doubleday took the photo when he was partners with Miles City's George Foster. Text and digital restoration of photo postcard by Gary Coffrin.
