There are very few days when we have control of our time. No matter what our schedules may be, there is always a change taking place that keeps something from happening when it is supposed to happen. And when the day is ended and our schedules have not been met, then it begins to drag on our spirits. Soon we become so wound up in the problems of the moment that the delights of our souls drift away and become a part of the most of "someday." Someday I will get to do what I want to do. Someday when this necessary work is finished - and is it possible that the things we believe to be so necessary are really robbers of our lives? Do we spend too much time with the menial tasks and allow our creativity - the ability to bring newness into our lives - to dry up and become nonexistent? William Blake called this within us "God." One of the greatest poets ever to live, he believed that if we keep alive our ability to see and feel the beauty of life, our menial tasks will become easy and the way successful. Yesterday is only a dream, tomorrow only a vision, but today - we live. If we live as we should, our yesterdays will be dreams of happiness, and our tomorrow's will be visions of hope. Nothing is so sad as the man who spends all his time today judging tomorrow by his experiences of yesterday. He has a vision, but his faith does not support him to pursue it. If some great stroke of good fortune should overtake him, he will be all ready to go, but he doesn't really expect it to happen. So today he sits waiting for the world to change for him, never guessing that he is the one who must change. No one is so misled as the woman who has such a busy schedule that she hasn't time to listen to her children. She expects to take the time to play with them - someday. But it is today that the bridges must be built from the soul to the body to the spirit. It isn't something built from a quick kiss or a smart smack in the right place, but from daily communion and understanding. Today is the very life of life when the best things are nearest - breath in our nostrils, light in our eyes, lowers at our feet, duties at our hand, and the path of God before us.

๐—”๐—ก๐—ก๐—œ๐—˜ ๐—ข๐—”๐—ž๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—ฌ, the most famous sharpshooter in the world. Born in 1860 in Ohio, the diminutive Oakley was five feet tall. At age 15, she paid her motherโ€™s mortgage with earnings from shooting and selling game. Chief Sitting Bull first met Oakley in 1884, christening her Watanya Cicilla, Little Sure Shot. He called her his adopted daughter and Annie thereafter called Sitting Bull her adopted father. Annie Oakley and husband Frank Butler joined Buffalo Billโ€™s Wild West in 1885, the year Sitting Bull was with the show.

The glamour shot was by NYCโ€™s renowned White Studio to publicize Oakley's short acting career, 1902-03 stage appearances in โ€˜The Western Girl.โ€™ Oakley wore a dark wig, since her hair had turned white after her hospitalization in 1901. Makeup and lighting were expertly done by the studio, a firm known for its work with the rich and famous. The photo resides at the McCracken Research Library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Authenticated prints are held by other museums as well. Click image to enlarge/clarify if using a PC.

SUN DANCE LODGE, Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, 1907. Many of the reservation's 1,400 inhabitants had gathered for days of ritual and celebration. The Edward Curtis photo gave us a glimpse inside the lodge when few people were present. The camp was near Ashland, about 80 miles SW of Miles City, Montana. Each of the Northern Plains tribes performed a version of the Sun Dance ceremony lasting several days. Click to enlarge the view.

In 1878, Little Wolf and Dull Knife led bands of Cheyenne on a perilous trek of seven months and more than 1,000 miles from their incarceration camps in Oklahoma to their former hunting grounds where there were still buffalo. The survivors who reached southeastern Montana remained there. Prohibitions against photographing the Sun Dance came after cameras became more common. Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.

Two people in agreement sets a trend. It works well, and it works for the good or the bad. Be very careful how you agree with someone, particularly if it is destructive. We put down dozens of claims every day, though it may sound like speculation. The markers are there by our own mouths and though it seems like only words, it sets a trend. If we could go back and see what we talked about, what we were afraid of, what we said was possible, we could see where we put down the roots as well. We have been told that where two agree as touching anything on earth, it is established. Do we want that? ~ As far as I am concerned, if they are hungry let them eat grass or their own dung. ~

Tracks on the frozen river had extra-long, closely spaced ties. The โ€œice bridgeโ€ near Bismarck (ND) was constructed in just a few days and was usable for about two months.
The Northern Pacific Railway had arrived at Bismarck in 1873, but a steel bridge to cross the Missouri River was not completed until August 1883.

NO WAY was my first reaction upon seeing the ice bridge! The great looking locomotive was likely shined for the photo. Note the vestibule on the observation car, which also had an exhaust from a wood stove at the forward right corner. PC users can click image to enlarge/clarify. The shutter was slow, so there was some blur to anyone who moved even slightly.

Those of us who have lived on the Northern Plains know that ice breaks on the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers in March. I strongly suspect that the photo marked the first crossing of the season, a newsworthy event, likely January 1879 or a bit earlier.

The photo was used as the basis for a line drawing that appeared in the March 15, 1879, issue of Harperโ€™s Magazine. Every source I found incorrectly dated the photo as March because they confused the magazineโ€™s cover date with the date of the photo. With long transit times the negative and because artwork was prepared many days before the cover date, the earliest possible time for the photo was probably late January 1879.

F.J. Haynes, under contract with the Northern Pacific Railroad, captured views of the railroadโ€™s westward expansion into lands formerly occupied by Native Americans. His negatives are housed at the venerable Montana Historical Society. Research and Photoshop restoration by Gary Coffrin.
