What person does not hope for a spiritual experience that will connect him with the inevitable source of all good? What person does not hope for a touch to open his stoney heart to understand his own potential? Who has not fallen prey to a mountain of misinformation and to the belief that there is no justice in the world? While the world of events whirls and spins and shocks the rural soul, the sophisticated person of broader experience says that is the way it is, and they is why we act the way we do. But that very opinion propels a person headlong into the whirring teeth of absolute destruction. Who will hit the button? Who will stop this swift descent? It is a personal responsibility, a very personal responsibility, and who can do it? ~ You can dictate your terms. I am your prisoner, and must submit, but I am still a man, the same as you. ~

BEFORE WalMart, 1904. Female photographer Evelyn Cameron made the portrait at Knowlton Store, 40 miles east of Miles City, Montana. Three gents wore ties. Felix Grey, behind a sharpening wheel at near left, held a sign stating: ‘We Sell Lipton’s Tea.’ The sign by the door promoted Old English Curve Cut pipe to***co. An Old Hickory wagon occupied the foreground. Text and a bit of digital photo restoration by Gary Coffrin.

SHAVING WOMAN, a/k/a Mrs. White Elk, circa 1880s. In perhaps the 19th Century’s most intimate studio portrait of a Native American, L.A. Huffman took a candid shot after giving Shaving Woman a ring which she was examining. The shot was even more remarkable when you remember that the Northern Cheyenne had recently surrendered to Army troops and that Mrs. White Elk was in a White man’s studio. White Elk, a Northern Cheyenne warrior, had fought at the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn. Click photo to enlarge.

Mrs. White Elk was described by Huffman as “shy, graceful and modest.” The portraits of Native Americans by Miles City (Montana) photographer L.A. Huffman rank among the best in American history. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

WINTER QUARTERS. Starting in 1896, photographer Walter McClintock visited the Blackfeet Nation in NW Montana for some weeks during each of the next 20 years. The Blackfeet decorated their tepees to honor the spirits of nature.
The hand-colored lantern slide measured 3x4 inches (8x10cm), and was among those used in McClintock’s public lectures. McClintock took thousands of photos, preserving history of the Old Ways. The second comment below contains another view with the same tepee. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

SIMILAR CAPTURES by my two favorite Old West photographers.

[Left] L.A. Huffman photographed Andy Speelman saddling the wild horse near Ekalaka in far Southeastern Montana. The print was hand-tinted in Huffman’s Miles City studio. Huffman added the spurs and armband. He dated the image as 1894, perhaps earlier than actual. Click either image for a better view.

"The teachings are for all, not just for Indians... The white people never wanted to learn before. They thought we were savages. Now they have a different understanding, and they do want to learn. We are all children of God. The tradition is open to anyone who wants to learn." --Don Jose Matusuwa, HUICHOL– In the summer of 1994, a white buffalo calf was born. This means that now is the time for all races to come together. The Elders say that at this time a voice from within will speak to everyone. It will say now is the time to forgive, now is the time to come together. Are we willing to do this? Are we willing to quit judging other people? The Elders say, He will be talking through people of all races and gender. We need to open our hearts and welcome our brothers and sisters. Great Spirit, let my ears be open as I walk the path You have chosen for me.
