For those who have a wait-and-see attitude it is more wait than see. Then they claim it is better to not expect anything than to be disappointed. These people build the same mental images - but they see nothing. Being able to see in the spirit is as necessary as having a blueprint to build a house. The details need to be filled in, finally coming to that completed picture - so vivid and clear that it must come into being. Anything we touch or use was first an image, an idea, in someone's mind. Seeing it and sensing it and loving it is writing an order to receive it. Mental images should never lack from a poor consciousness. Even if it seems impossible, fill it in. Ideas often have miracles of their own. ~ Our fathers gave us many laws, which they learned from their fathers. These laws were good. ~

THE CIGARETTE, 1908. The gap between art and portraiture was bridged with dramatic lighting and by retouching to make the smoke more prominent. The Sioux cowboy was likely touring with Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show. Captured in profile, he was wearing a silk scarf, beaded wrist guards, sateen vest, and a hat with a wide buckle band.

The pictorialism movement helped elevate photography to an art form. It is not too huge of a leap to connect this studio image by John A. Johnson to the dramatic vistas of Roland Reed and Ansel Adams. They did not merely take pictures, they made their photographs. Click image to clarify/enlarge on a PC. THE OLD WAY, circa 1905. Crow (Apsรกalooke) elders of the Medicine To***co Society prepared seeds for planting on their reservation in Southeastern Montana. The Medicine To***co Ceremony originated centuries earlier when the Crow separated from their parent tribe, the Hidatsa, and traveled west to Wyoming and Montana. By protecting and propagating the sacred seeds, the Crow believed that they would ensure the well-being of their tribe.

WOODEN TRESTLE BRIDGE, completed 1883. The tallest wooden railroad bridge in the world, the spectacular Marent Gulch Bridge, was 226 feet (69 meters) tall and 866 feet long. It took 800,000 board feet of lumber and a workforce of 150 men to complete the Northern Pacific Railway bridge. Just two years later, the entire structure was replaced by an iron bridge to address stability issues and fire danger. Circled in yellow are a horse rider at the base and two carpenters on a trestle at the right. PC users should click the image to better see detail!

Marent Gulch is 12 miles northwest of Missoula on Highway 93 in western Montana. A newer bridge is still in use. The 9,000 negatives of photographer F.J. Haynes reside at the venerable Montana Historical Society. Research and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

"The dances are prayers." --Pop Chalee, TAOS PUEBLOโ€“ When we dance to the drum we pray to the Creator and attract the heartbeat of the earth. We never dance without reason; every dance has a purpose. We dance for rain; we dance for healing; we dance for seasons; we dance for joy; we dance for our children; we dance for the people; we dance for courage. The drum plays to the beat of the heart, to the beat of the Earth. The drum connects us to the Earth while we dance our prayers. Oh, Great One, let my dance and prayer be heard by You.
