If everyone were alike, what a dull world this would be. It is the individuality of each person that makes the world so interesting. The tremendous differences in people give a wide range of personalities, beliefs, and appearances to every group, no matter how small. If all the flowers in the world were of one color, would we think them so beautiful? It is the variety and wide range of rainbow colors that keeps us fascinated. Cowper wrote, "Variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavor." So many have no thought of life except what they will eat, what they will wear, and how they can entertain themselves. And then we come on someone who has the ability to see loveliness in the sunlight and charm in the quiet rain. They can say things to encourage, or to make calm and peaceful. We meet many different kinds of people. Some we love and some we like and love, which is a terrific difference. It is to find a wholeness or a part of our lost self in someone else. It isn't that they are so much like us or that we believe the way they do, but that they communicate, and it is this rare communication that respects the differences between peoples.

NORTHERN PACIFIC Roundhouse, 1887, Glendive, MT. The NPโ€™s westward expansion encountered the Yellowstone River in 1881, and Glendive sprouted up as a railroad town. The roundhouse had 40 stalls. โ€“ Additional Information โ€“
The Montana Historical Society has 9,000 negatives that Frank Jay Haynes and his employees made from 1876 to 1915. My favorite Old West photographer, L.A. Huffman, had briefly worked for Haynes.

Since the above image was captured in Eastern Montana, I must salute two extraordinary area photographers: Evelyn Cameron and L.A. Huffman.

Evelyn Cameron lived a remarkable life. โ€˜Photographing Montana 1894-1928: The Life and Work of Evelyn Cameronโ€™ is one of the finest biographies of any American photographer! The extraordinary womanโ€™s life was chronicled by Donna Lucey, a wonderful writer and skilled researcher.

L.A. Huffmanโ€™s work was gloriously chronicled by historian Mark Brown and Bill Felton, Huffmanโ€™s son-in-law, in two volumes: โ€˜The Frontier Yearsโ€™ and โ€˜Before Barbed Wire.โ€™ Both books have history, anecdotes, and details of frontier life that cannot be found elsewhere. Highly recommended!

The one comprehensive volume on Haynes is โ€˜Following the Frontier with F. Jay Haynes.โ€™ The books mentioned are no longer in print, but used copies can typically be found on eBay, Amazon, and AbeBooks for less than $20.

The photo was preserved on an 8x10 inch glass plate negative. Photographic prints were individually made in direct contact with the plate, so prints could not be larger than the negative. Evelyn Cameronโ€™s captures were all 5x7 inches. L.A. Huffman never shot with larger than 6.5x8.5 inch negatives. Unlike Cameron, Huffman obtained electricity for his Miles City studio, and bought an enlarger in about 1905.

23 Mฤ€ORI Man, 1860s. The Mฤori of New Zealand often had facial tattoos and sometimes full-body tattooing. The early daguerreotype print by John Cromb was made shortly after 20 years of wars in which Whites gained control of Mฤori lands. DNA research seems to trace Mฤori origins to China, then migration to Formosa and later to Polynesian islands. The Mฤori were New Zealandโ€™s first inhabitants, arriving by canoe from Polynesia about 900 years ago. The source image was the back cover of โ€œOut of Time: Mฤori & the Photographer.โ€

Dignified portraits of conquered indigenous people on any continent were rare during the 1860s. PC users can click image to clarify/enlarge. Text and digital cleaning and sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. "There is no royal road to anything - One thing at a time, and all things in succession. That which grows slowly endures." - J.G. Holland - The first lesson we have to learn is that instant success in anything is a fantasy. The overnight success stories we hear about are really products of much preparation. If we could view a life laid out before us, we could see it is much like a hand sewn quilt, built of many tiny pieces, colors of every hue, fabrics of every kind, and patiently joined together by tiny stitches to give many years of service. Maybe we missed a stitch someplace and it caused a weak place, but the strength of many other stitches will carry it through. Finally a complete quilt has been created and it is strong and lasting. When we truly want to move ahead we build our lives a quilt block at a time, patiently adding to another part of life until we have the strength and courage to endure. Take on step at a time, but take it positively forward! The patience will be rewarded. To have a dream come true we must first have a dream. Don't look back. The past is gone, but the future is still in our hands.
