Everyone must have a way of life. The home, the position, the social level, the health of the body and of the emotions are all a part of daily living. But beyond that there must be a reason, a way of life. We must believe in something, live by something, and have a shelter within ourselves where there are no pretenses. Life cannot be one carefree round of living on the surface. It is a thing of depth and width and height, and full of avenues never investigated. Like the body, it is made up of many parts. Beneath the skin there must beat a heart, a network of nerves, the strength of muscles, and much we cannot begin to explain. As the body depends upon the heart we must have in our lives something to depend upon, something with which to identify ourselves. There must be a central point, a hitching post to keep all of life running smoothly. We need something to help us retreat as well as to go forward. We must have something to live by, as well as something for which we would willing die. We need divine wisdom to see, and the strength to break away, those almost invisible fingers of possessiveness that grip our lives. We do not simply live, we live because. We live because of others, because of beautiful things and times and places. We live because God gave us life, to be happy in, and to find a special way.

AL. FURSTNOWโ€™S SADDLERY, circa 1908. Prussian immigrant Albert Furstnow (originally Firstenaugh) learned saddlemaking in Europe. Furstnow opened his shop in 1894, after working for Ernest Goettlich and later Robbins & Lenoir in Miles City, Montana. Furstnowโ€™s became the areaโ€™s largest saddlery, using specialized workstations to maximize production. Peak output is unknown, but might have reached 2000 saddles (plus harnesses and tack) per year before WW I.

Rancher Charles Coggshall had been an early investor, but started his own operation in 1899. That shop sold in 1909, becoming Miles City Saddlery. Its output peaked at 1,937 saddles in 1916. In this age of freethinkers, many a business and political genius has asked, "Who can I join hands with that will do me the most good?" Almost any aggressive person can get his feet on the ladder of success. It is keeping them there that gets into artfulness. Because there is a time to think and act independently, a person's footing may get very shaky and very temporary. A law of cause and effect works minute by minute, and that simply says we get only when we give and we reap only what we sow. No one else can do for us what we have to do for ourselves. And no one else can keep us sharp and honest and respectful. It is our job. ~ Once I moved about like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all. ~

Personal choices have shaped our lives. Some were made too fast, without time to see the good and the bad. Certain things were dressed in bright colors and drew us like bees to nectar. We chose, we sighed, we cried. It was mere color and taste - not substance. Time teaches wisdom - or does it? Youth or age or circumstances plays little part. It is the lust that twists judgment and sets us up like clay ducks. This thing, that person, that situation - would make all things perfect? It is a personal choice, a path chosen and not easy to walk - sometimes impossible. ~ The white man builds big house, cost much money, like big cage, shut out sun, can never move, always sick. ~

"Abuse and repression have no place in a traditional family." --Haida Gwaii, Traditional Circle of Elders Traditional families guided by their culture were taught how to live. The were taught about relationships, respect and spirituality. Only since alcohol was introduced to Indians have we seen physical abuse, sexual abuse and verbal abuse. These behaviors have no room in traditional families. The cycle of abuse must be broken during this generation. We do this by asking for help to quit drinking and abusing and return to our traditional culture and spirituality. Creator, plant inside of me the knowledge of the traditional family.
