Luther, a Tsa la gi, explained his creative God by saying, "God take Himself and make the fish, God take Himself and make the tsi s du [rabbit]; He take Himself and make the wa ya [wolf]; He take Himself and make the squirrel, and He take Himself and make me. These things my brothers." But, Luther, what do you do when you want to go squirrel hunting? Merriment danced in his black eyes and he added, "I just say, Squirrel-Brother, God made you for me!" ~ I traveled thousands of miles along our winding trails, through unbroken solitude's of the wild forest, listening to the songs of the woodland birds. ~

THE MARCH THAW by L.A. Huffman, probably 1884. The Miles City flood was caused by an ice jam on the Tongue River, immediately west of town. Pedestrians were crossing the street on ice chunks. Signs were visible for a telegraph office, post office, bakery, and a bowling alley! (Click for a better view.) The photo was from 4th Street looking east.

The 1880 census reported 629 people, and Fort Keogh had a larger population than Miles City. The Montana town was founded in 1877 when Col. Nelson A. Miles had kicked out the sellers of alcohol from Fort Keogh. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.

L.A. Huffman first photographed Yellowstone National Park in 1882. He traveled 750+ miles (1200+ km) with packhorses so he could photograph the many wonders of the USA's first national park. The photo below was shot two decades later in 1902.

The horse and rider were bounding through the deep snow, with Huffman behind. Did you notice that the rider has no covering over his ears? Click or zoom to better see the details, the snow on the horse's hind quarters.

Although the Montana Historical Society cites Huffman, I am inclined to think the photo was by F.J. Haynes or one of his employees. Text and Photoshop restoration of the image by Gary Coffrin.

Like attracts like. If we give up, so will others. If we cry, so will they. But if we decide this is a new beginning, others will take courage. We influence other people. Our attitudes send out ripples of feeling - like the scent of flowers that floats on air currents. What we think and say sets the stage for what is to happen. We can change our minds, our words, our attitudes, and we stop crying. We act like our prayers are already answered and take steps to show we believe it. When the early morning sun breaks through the far side of the woods, the dark places are lighted and much healing takes place. And so it is with us. ~ Great Spirit, you lived first, and you are older than all need. ~
