JULY 4, 1905. Old West photographer L.A. Huffman traveled to Forsyth (Montana) for a celebration at their wagon bridge that spanned the Yellowstone River. Prior to 1905 the NEAREST bridge was 45 miles, a long day by horse, downstream at Miles City.

Rosebud County residents previously had to ford the river in a low spot, use an irregular ferry service in high water, or wait for a thick enough layer of ice to form. The wagon bridge with its wood planks was built before automobiles were common by W. S. Hewett Bridge Co. at a cost of $53,200. The 200-feet long bridge was merely 16 feet wide.

WORLD’S TALLEST BRICK STRUCTURE (right), Anaconda, Montana.

Built in 1918, Anaconda Copper Mining stack is 585 feet, 30 feet taller than the Washington Monument. It was constructed with 2,464,652 locally-produced, curved bricks and 41,350 sacks of cement, 114 railcars of sand and fire clay. Still standing, the stack is 60 feet wide and wall thickness is 22.25 inches at the peak.

NOTE: The older photo at left showed the base of a different ACM stack, but made clear that construction was done by bricklayers using wood scaffolds. With growing demand during the electrical age, Anaconda Copper Mining became the world’s largest copper producer. Click either picture to enlarge/clarify.
