In retrospect, we have ignored common sense in favor of doing what we wanted to do. We wish we had not done it, but we said what we wanted to say, spoke out when it would have been better to stay quiet - we have overruled our common sense. Looking back again, when did we get off track? What little thing stung us into action? If we learn to hear the voice of wisdom we can overcome our foolishness. Wisdom never lets us down, but ignoring it will put away from us the best friend we can have. ~ I am tired of talk that comes to nothing. ~

Perception can be very wise but reading between the lines in other people's lives is only guesswork. By rationalizing and putting two and two together it can almost be assumed that something is a certain way, right? Wrong. People identify with other people because of their likenesses - but there is nothing new under the sun. Human nature is human nature and will stay that way until we all stand close enough to the divine. We are ever so much better served not to guess about other people. And we are better people when we mind our own business. ~ The Apache was unlike any other Indian Tribe the whites have ever fought....He saw no reason for fighting unless there was something tangible and immediate to be gained. ~

The woodbine that climbs the trunk of the old oaks has begun to change color. Bright red leaves drop to the ground and join the yellow ones that already have fallen. The cypress has pushed new knees through the surface near the pond, and sand plums are falling from skinny little trees near the barn. Only a few signs that summer is coming to an end, but very definite signs. Owls call in late evening and hawks spread their tremendous wings and fly late into the evening, circling and circling hoping their sharp eyes will spot food on the ground. Soon cool breezes will bear down on us and we will be glad for a sweater on late evening walks. Time passes so quickly and all the things we love about fall will be here. The biggest job of all is finding enough time to really enjoy everything before it all changes again.

First things and first times....the newness of the present moment holds such a breath of youth, such a challenge, there are moments in everyone's life they wish they could relive. Just to recall those times when the newness, the memory of first things were beautiful and exciting. But life never stands still. It moves forward or it decays. It cannot hold on to the past in any way. If the newness of first things has not grown into finer and more beautiful moments, then it cannot go on. Everyone can recall something so dear that it becomes new again just by thinking about it. Courage, love, joy, contentment, all these can call to mind the special moments that were beginnings of new eras, new times in living. The scales of life tip this way and that to make those times full of meaning and sometimes vividly painful. And then sometimes it takes a season to mend the heart and spirit. When they are ready, the experience of new times and new beginnings and first things will bloom once more and the youthful challenge again enchants.

Life is complicated, no doubt about it. We start something and it leads us into something else - and that into another thing, and we ask, "How did this happen?" On the other hand, we wouldn't like it any better if we were confined to a treadmill that goes and goes but gets nowhere. It is life lived at a time when order as we once knew it, is nonexistent. It helps to go back to where we started and take each bend and turn and change things - even if we have to admit we were wrong and ask someone to forgive us. All is not lost, and it helps to admit we made moves that were wrong. And even against our most selfish nature - begin to make them right. ~ Do not wrong or hate your neighbor; for it is not he that you wrong: You wrong yourself. ~

Never let another person tell you what to think and what to do. Start now to think things through and get ready for what you want. You have to be prosperous in your thinking long before you see the money. Your health must have the support of your mind and words before it can keep its good condition. You have to be lovable before anyone can love you. We think "instant" when it takes time. Remember the flower - first the bud and then the bloom, and all the steps that go in between. What do you want? See it now in your mind, and keep on seeing it so clearly that it becomes a treasure map. Enjoy looking at it and stop questioning whether it is going to work. It is your map - give it your attention. ~ We talk to Wakan Tanka and are sure he hears us. ~

"So I prayed, but I had to pray from my heart. All of my concentration and thoughts went from my head to my heart. All of my senses - hearing, smell, taste, and feeling - were connected to my heart." --Wallace Black Elk, LAKOTA– The heart is the gateway to the Unseen World, to the Spirit World. It takes real concentration to do this. To connect to our own heart is also a mental state. It starts in the head and transitions to the heart. This mental state is our inner stillness. Be still and know. This place of the heart is very joyous and peaceful. It is this place that we become one with God, our Creator. Great Spirit, teach me to be a heart warrior.

MORAN BROS. SADDLE, circa 1885, photographed by renowned Miles City (MT) lensman L.A. Huffman. The saddle had extensive floral tooling, covered rigging rings, double cotton cinches, tapaderos (covers in front of the stirrups), and an unusual Angora wool drape (called ‘anquero’ by the maker). Buffalo Bill’s Wild West began touring in 1883, and the Angora cover of this ‘Wild West’ design was influenced by saddles Bill Cody was riding. [See example in oldest comment on my page.] Click image to enlarge/clarify if using a PC. Research and small-file digital restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.

- Historical Background -
I estimate the date of Huffman’s photo as 1885–86. Photographer L.A. Huffman reportedly had at least one Moran saddle at the time of his death in 1931. Comments are welcomed, since I know more about Photoshop than saddles.

Miles City, the Montana cowtown at the end of the trail for many Texas cattle drives, hosted some extraordinary saddle makers. Moran Brothers saddles are prized by collectors and museums.

Much of the published history of Moran Brothers saddlery was dead wrong. False claims like ‘Miles City’s first saddlery’ are often posted with auction listings, since earlier than actual dates can increase perceived value. One auction house listed a start date of 1875 for Moran Brothers, although Miles City did not yet exist! Even reputable auction houses make huge blunders, since they cannot have in-house experts in every field. This type of BS was, and still is, often copied in social media, magazines, and books.

The brothers had worked for the famed J.S. Collins & Co. saddlery in Cheyenne. Both Pioneer Saddlery and Goettlich & DeBord had opened in Miles City before the Morans. In July 1884, the Morans’ arrival and plans to open a saddlery were documented by Yellowstone Journal. Nearly all published accounts incorrectly cited 1879 as the saddlery’s year of opening. Still, the inaugural date of 1884 was a full decade before the famous Al Furstnow’s Saddlery started business. In December 1896 (not 1895 as commonly cited), Al Furstnow’s, then partly owned by Charles Coggshall, bought out Moran’s inventory. Thus, Moran had operated in Miles City from 1884 through 1896, not 1879–95 as typically listed. At least two other saddleries had proceeded Moran Brothers.

In 1899, Charles Coggshall would start his own operation. In 1909, Coggshall sold majority control of his saddlery. The new owners changed the name to Miles City Saddlery, but continued to market saddles under the Coggshall moniker.
L.A. Huffman’s photos have been the subject of five books. ‘The Frontier Years’ and ‘Before Barbed Wire’ are the must-have volumes. Huffman’s photos of buffalo hunters at work and cowboy life on the unfenced range, as well as portraits of important warriors of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, are national treasures.

‘This Last West’ by Dr. Loram L. Hoopes has historical details regarding Miles City’s first decade, 1876–86. It provided data with citations for Moran Brothers, Goettlich & DeBord, and Pioneer Saddlery. Photo resides at the North Dakota State Historical Society.

"There is one God looking down on us all. We are children of the one God. God is listening to me. The sun, the darkness, the winds are all listening to what we now say." --Geronimo, APACHE– The Old Ones before us knew things. Many of them were so spiritual that the Creator told them things through visions, ceremonies and prayer. The Creator taught them about interconnectedness, balance and respect. The Old Ones experienced these things and told us we are all children of the same God. We all live under the same natural laws. Every human being, every animal, every plant, every insect, every bird, we are all the same in the eyes of God. Great Mystery, teach me to respect all the things You have created.
