It is good to keep the promises we make to ourselves to enjoy a peaceful hour. How long has it been? How long has it been since we walked on a grassy hillside and watched the shadows hover and move? Walking is good for the legs - but it does wonders for the soul. The autumn season is one of the best times to walk and think. There is a rhythm in the earth that rises into our feet when we walk. In it is the healing and it centers the soul so that the cares of the world cannot get in to destroy peace. And peace has so many side effects. It restores youth and gives perspective to a world-weary mind. ~ The Great Spirit made these mountains and rivers for us, and all this land. ~

Born June 22, 1952, on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, Mr. Greene is a 73 year old FIRST NATIONS Canadian actor who belongs to the ONEIDA tribe. He has worked on stage, in film, and in TV productions in Canada, the U.K., and the U.S.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his 1990 performance in "Dances with Wolves". Other films you may have seen him in include Thunderheart, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, the Green Mile, and Wind River. Graham Greene graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in 1974 & immediately began performing in professional theatre in Toronto and England, while also working as an audio technician for area rock bands. His TV debut was in 1979 and his screen debut in 1983. His acting career has now spanned over 4 decades & he remains as busy as ever. In addition to the Academy Award nomination for Dance with Wolves, he has been consistently recognized for his work, and also received nominations in 1994, 2000, 2004, 2006, and 2016. Graham Greene lives in Toronto, Canada, married since 1994, and has 1 adult daughter.

I SHOULD KNOW BETTER, but here is a photo from 1982. Seated, I had removed my suit coat and tie. My friend Stu Sherman still wore his. We were working for a retail chain of six bicycle stores headquartered in Santa Barbara, and had ended our day at the bicycle industry’s largest trade show in Long Beach.

Stu came to Santa Barbara after receiving his accounting degree from prestigious Duke University. I had finished my graduate work in philosophy at non-prestigious Arizona State. We both went on to better things, but to this day the lad from Springfield (NJ) and the kid from Miles City (MT) remain friends. "Hey, will you cut that pizza into six slices? I don't think I can eat eight slices."

SUN DANCE LODGE, Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, 1907. Many of the reservation's 1,400 inhabitants had gathered for days of ritual and celebration. The Edward Curtis photo gave us a glimpse inside the lodge when few people were present. The camp was near Ashland, about 80 miles SW of Miles City, Montana. Each of the Northern Plains tribes performed a version of the Sun Dance ceremony lasting several days. Click to enlarge the view.

In 1878, Little Wolf and Dull Knife led bands of Cheyenne on a perilous trek of seven months and more than 1,000 miles from their incarceration camps in Oklahoma to their former hunting grounds where there were still buffalo. The survivors who reached southeastern Montana remained there. Prohibitions against photographing the Sun Dance came after cameras became more common. DINNER AT THE CHUCKWAGON, 1887. The rope corral had merely one rope to restrain the working horses of the spring branding roundup. (PC users, click to enlarge and see more detail.) You can see large tree limbs that were dragged in for firewood, single-pole range tents, and 16 cowboys. The L.A. Huffman photo was on the huge SL Ranch, southeast of Miles City, Montana. THE MODERN MADONNA was Richard Throssel’s title for the portrait of March 1905. The unidentified Crow woman was wearing a dress decorated with elk ivories. There was some blur from motion, since a long exposure was required inside the relatively dark tipi. Richard Throssel’s best known photographs were taken on the Crow Reservation of Eastern Montana from 1904-11. His work was neglected until the 1997 publication of Peggy Albright’s “Crow Indian Photographer.” Digital restoration of photo and text by Gary Coffrin.

Gil Birmingham is an American actor of Comanche ancestry, best known for his portrayal of Billy Black in the The Twilight Saga film series.

Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.
