Contentment happens when our emotions give place to common things that in other times can draw little attention. It is releasing a deep inner peace that heals sadness and lifts a sagging spirit. Contentment is an intensely personal thing, adjusting to different people in its most effective way. It rides a shaft of sunlight to put on the gray bark of a tree, or it rises from laughter, deep and kind. It is nearly always unexpected and settles as softly as a bird lights on a limb. It is a remarkable fact that we simply let contentment happen. Socrates called it a natural wealth, but most have called it a miracle. ~ Kinship with all creatures of the earth, sky and water was a real and active principle. ~

When the going gets rough, bear down. Every woman that has ever given birth knows you don't stop because it hurts. You give it all you have and when the breakthrough happens - what a wonderful prize! The swimmer knows he cannot stop or he will sink. And if he has to pause, he rolls over and floats until new strength comes to go on. Work awhile, endure awhile, believe always, and never turn back. The best is yet to come. You wouldn't want to quit and then find out later you had only inches to go. ~ It is the wind that comes out of our mouths now that gives us life. ~

We have often heard it said that God never closes one door unless He opens another. It is a great comfort to know we never really lose when we believe, for any defeat can be turned to good if we will absorb the lesson in it. And yet, how often we refuse to go through that door that has been opened for us. It is so much easier to stand back and wail about the closed one. There seems to be a certain amount of glorification in defeat. It is a subtle something that hides in us and keeps us from doing well that which we know we are capable of doing. If we show strength, we are afraid we will have to stand alone. Sometimes a door will close for us because that particular one would have caused us more unhappiness, but it never closes for punishment. God is love and love does not punish, nor does it have any power but to give what is right and good for us. With this knowledge, we can by grace walk through those doors that open to us and know it is right.

Something new is always an exciting prospect. It can be anything that changes the face of daily life and brings it into a new pattern that makes us feel better. Drudgery can take over our thinking and then our actions. Sticking too close to one routine and never having a change is an obvious sign we are heading for drudgery. If renewal is to come there must be change - even if it is to walk a short distance, talk to someone out of the ordinary, and do something for someone. These things sound simplistic but if they turn our thinking to more creativity or more relaxation, it is worth doing. ~ I felt that I was leaving all that I had but I did not cry. ~

No wonder fear throws a wrench in our well-laid plans. We have been relying on dead gods, on lifeless theories and trying to fit our keys into corroded locks. This isn't living, it is throwing in with empty promises with nothing to back them up. Here we are, spiritual creations, trying to survive on mental and physical remedies, never considering that we have access to treasuries of ideas and wisdom and spiritual knowledge. These are the appointment makers that say, "go here, go there," and we can go in confidence. Spirit, come out of your web of supposed protection and begin to use the gifts. They are yours and they are beautiful beyond the reasoning human mind. ~ I am you! I am yourself! Don't let me waste Upon the shelf. ~

"To be able to greet the sun with the sounds from all of Nature is a great blessing, and it helps us to remember Who is the real provider of all of our benefits." --Thomas Yellowtail, CROW– The Elders say we should pray to the East every morning. Just try it! Get up early in the morning, watch the sun and listen to the morning sounds, the birds, the winds; smell the air, feel the breeze and the warmth of the sun. Your mind will expand and you will experience oneness with the Great Spirit. You'll realize who is really in charge. You'll realize an interconnectedness. You'll realize how much the Creator loves you! Just try it! Great Spirit, today, let me feel the Earth, the Father Sun and your presence.

Walk with me to the edge of the woods and hear the birds. They haven't all gone south, some stay the winter. The cardinal will later perch in the evergreens and make snow seem whiter - but now he sings in the bottom land that is protected from the wind. See the last of summer's flowers, the sunflower that is a great deal bigger than the palm of your hand. And watch the lone jet draw lines from one horizon almost to the other before the wind scatters his lines. Even when the season seems to be taking away all that the land has produced - remember the potential is still there, and so is yours. ~ We gave you our hearts. You now have them. ~

Do you want to know the truth about worry? It hits everyone. It is not an ailment just for weaklings or cowards. Worry is the cat you throw out only to have it back in before you can close the door. Worry has another side. It proves we care very much, and that we appreciate our God-given gifts and loved ones. In a way, it is a sign of strength, for if we can turn it to faith, then faith can be just as strong. And to overcome worry, or to at least control it, there must be faith. Faith, and the knowledge that if you could be in all the places, watching closely all the things about which you are concerned, you couldn't do a tenth as much good as one simple prayer. We are taught, "Be not anxious," "Fear not," and "Be not afraid," and too quickly we become anxious, fearful, and very frightened. But even then, we have only to put worry to flight by remembering those quieting words that are so absolutely true, "Be still and know that I am God." Recently we had a summer storm. It was rumbling and heavy with darkness. The lightning flashed across the sky and currents. When the first huge drops of rain spattered across the walks and lawns, our thoughts turned to the safety of anyone or anything that might be caught out in the wind and rain. We've been through many summer storms. Some of them left permanent marks upon our memories. The threatening, the darkness, the pressure of the atmosphere are not so different from the emotional storms of the human life. We see lives under pressure bend to and fro in the uncertainty of life. We know concern for the safety of those who experience emotional storms. Then we know the only answer is in God's hands. There is no other way. The good earth rights itself quickly after a storm. Nature comes forth more richly for having gone through the storm, and the scars are lost in new growth. And blessed are we when we lift ourselves up to a new, deeper radiance and peace.

THE EAGLE CATCHER, 1908. Holding an eagle, an unidentified Hidatsa native in an Edward S. Curtis photo was gazing across the valley. To attract eagles, meat was placed as bait. The catcher, covered with brush, waited in a hole to grab the legs.

The Hidatsa, who were not nomadic, lived in North Dakota along the Missouri River. They resided in dome-shaped earthen huts, not tipis. The Great Plains smallpox epidemic of 1837 reduced Native populations by 80 - 90 percent. The Three Affiliated Tribes, the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara, have 17,000 enrolled members, many living on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in central North Dakota. Variety is said to be the spice of life. Anything in which we can continually find something new, a difference, will hold our attention indefinitely. Even the most interesting work can become monotonous if there never is a change. We are a restless people, finding life more livable and exciting when we know there is a bit of change in store. One isn't always aware of monotony. It is a subtle something that creeps silently into a well formed routine. And most are unaware of its presence until its victim, interest, begins to lose ground. Sometimes a change of pace fulfills a need for variety, but the most satisfying is one's ability to lay aside a regular routine to lend a hand to a neighbor when he needs it. The very old and happy habit of helping your neighbor never found a body bored. The hearts of helpers are light, not because they are searching for variety, but because variety find them when self is forgotten and the need to help a neighbor is the only thought.
