Talking trouble is rehearsing trouble. Innocent as it sounds, it draws an outline for the thing to happen. Medical information in the wrong hands lays out a mere possibility but is always a catalyst for hope and false hope at that. Remember that most of what we hear is simply read to us as a bedtime story meant to help us rest - but it never does. Someone said talk is cheap, but it isn't. It is one of the most expensive items we can handle. And talking trouble may be entertaining but it is costly - and never worth what we seem willing to pay. ~ I am master of my condition, I am master of my own body. ~

GLENDIVE Business District, 1882. Mixter’s Music Hall had boxes of bottles in front. Note the use of the key icon on the Keno sign. Whiskey or beer barrels were down the street. Beyond Jim’s Opera House were several business signs, all about the same size. A tent was at the far left. Miles City photographer L.A. Huffman traveled east to Glendive, Montana, population 500. The NP Railroad had six water stops along the 75-mile route: Tusler, Shirley, Blatchford, Terry, Fallon, and Hoyt.

Luman B. Mixter reportedly died in 1882 at age 37. Perhaps an interesting news story about Mixter’s death convinced Huffman that there would be a market for the photo. An eBay postcard listing with a mediocre scan provided my source file. Text and digital sharpening of image by Gary Coffrin.

SEEIN’ SANTA was perhaps Charlie Russell’s most jovial work, 1910. The horse had been startled. You can see the shocked rider's exhalation into the cold air ... and the liquor bottle in his right pocket. Russell knew cold winters, having worked as a trapper and as a cowhand in Montana during the 1880s.

Russell’s many Christmas cards were fun, lighthearted. The original watercolor is on display at the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana. Click image to enlarge/clarify. Happy holidays to all! -Gary Coffrin

The mighty YELLOWSTONE RIVER is the longest undammed river in the USA’s 48 contiguous states. Circa 1910, Johnny Breum took the photo near Fallon in Eastern Montana. Starting high in the mountains of Yellowstone National Park, the river flows uninterrupted for 700 miles until it meets up with the Missouri River near Williston, ND. The bluffs with colorful striations always instill feelings of home for this lad.

East of Billings, the Yellowstone is joined by the Bighorn River. Downriver, it is joined by the Tongue at Miles City, and then 35 miles further east by the Powder River. The region around the Big Horn, Powder, and Tongue rivers was the traditional summer hunting grounds for the Lakota Sioux, Crow, Cheyenne, and Cree. The Northern Pacific Railroad completed its path along the Yellowstone River in 1883. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

A NORTHERN CHEYENNE man posed in the frame of a sweat lodge in Eastern Montana for peripatetic photographer L.A. Huffman, probably 1905. Identified as Pretty Bird, the man was waiting for a helper to cover the frame with hides and pass him gourds of water to sprinkle on the hot stones. He would later, perhaps days later, plunge into a nearby creek at the end of his rite of purification. Behind the lodge were additional rocks and sage. Meat was hung for drying between two tepees. If using a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify.

The seminal volumes on L.A. Huffman were The Frontier Years (1955) and Before Barbed Wire (1956). Either is usually available for less than $20 on Amazon, eBay, or AbeBooks. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.
