How weak-willed are we at times when we've made a decision and know we must stand on it. It is so much easier to give in to the easy way of doing things. We are almost a "house divided against itself," and the strain of staying with a decision seems almost our enemy. But we never gain mush stature by giving in to ourselves against our better judgment. And we never get anywhere by scattering our efforts. Making a decisions is difficult enough without losing one's determination in following through. Laying down the responsibility is somewhat like warning children to behave themselves and then permitting them to continue to misbehave. How long has it been since you've proven to yourself that you mean business in carrying out a plan? A man of wisdom has written that we have firmness of character when we have the ability to say "no" to the wrong as well as to those things which are good but stand in the way of our progress. Always remember that to want something that is good and right is the blessing. God gave us the ability to desire of we would never have thought of using it. But God also gave us the ability to cry, to feel pain, and the freedom to choose whether we go on or quit. In our lives we face many decisions. Some are hard to make because we know we must turn our backs upon something that seems harmless at the moment simply because we know it would not be good in the long run. But there are also decisions that are more challenge than decision. They are the good things that are placed before us, and our will to follow through is tested. When defeat seems sure, then is the time to begin to fight. When others are quitting, then is the time to throw more strength into the battle. Anything worth having is worth working for, and is of lasting value. Very often these sieges must be made silently and without seeming effort. And yet we know we cannot get something for nothing. We have a service to perform. We can make it a drudge, or we can make it a delightful experience, according to our faith. Be persistent. Unless you do not particularly want your dreams to come true, you can't afford to know the meaning of apathy. You must continually be on the scene with the muscles of your mind toned. It isn't difficult to have a dream. But it often ceases at that point. The willingness to follow through, the determination to look impossibilities in the eye and trudge on must be practiced before that dream can amount to anything. All along life's road there are those who would discourage you, very often in ignorance, not realizing the effect of their words upon you. It is then that you must muster the strength to believe that theirs is only an opinion while your plans are based on the principle that all good things come to those who hustle while they wait. It is too bad that they cannot see your invisible companions, persistence, faith, and a worthwhile plan. Smile and walk on. There is a Divine being with whom we can place all our obstacles, all our doubts and fears - and then our work begins. We give lovingly of friendship, of any kind of help that we are capable of giving, of positive words and thoughts and understanding.

Dining room maid Mamie Newell was heavily laden with dinnerware sewn to her uniform, circa 1880. Toothpicks(!) were sewn on the sleeve at left, eight pieces of cutlery and three plates were also attached! The photo advertised the Slitor House Hotel & Restaurant in Waukon, Iowa.

P.C. Huffman, father of renowned frontier photographer L.A. Huffman, was the senior partner in the Huffman & Barnard Studio, which produce the bizarre promotional photo. The photographs of the younger Huffman have been the subject of five books.

In 1976, L.A. Huffman became the first and only career photographer inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. In 2023, L.A. Huffman was inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame, based on the nominating essay and documentation I submitted.

Vocal inflections by instrumentalists always catch my ear. Jon-Erik Kellso, my favorite living trumpet player, just nailed the Bubber Miley passage in a song Duke Ellington released in 1926. Mute work dates back to Joe ‘King’ Oliver and the earliest years of recorded jazz.

Vince Giordano and the Nitehawks, the group in the video, now play early jazz two nights per week at BOND 45 Downstairs in NYC. Jon-Erik Kellso and his small group play Sunday afternoons at NYC’s Ear Inn. If I am not restoring Old West photos or reading history, I am often listening to jazz.

KATHERINE STINSON, Montana State Fair, 1913. Pioneering aviatrix Katherine Stinson performed at Helena, allowing thousands to see a flying machine for the first time. Her Wright B was a pusher, with two propellers at the rear. Stinson dropped bags of mail that were loaded at the Fairgrounds to the top of Helena’s downtown post office, becoming the first female pilot to deliver “airmail.”
Stinson became the USA’s fourth licensed female pilot in 1912, eight years before Amelia Earhart had her first flying lesson. Miles City’s FIRST FLOOD, March 1881, photographed by L.A. Huffman. The Montana town was founded just four years prior, when Col. Nelson A. Miles kicked out the sellers of alcohol from Fort Keogh. An ice jam on the Tongue River, then having a path immediately west of the appropriately named Riverside Park, caused flooding.

Two deer heads were poking through the rails of the overhang. (Click for a better view is using a PC.) Signs were visible for the Telegraph Office, Post Office, a bakery, a bowling alley. The photo was from 4th Street looking east. During the June Rise, steamboats would dock nearby at what is now Cook Lake, just north of the town’s current outdoor swimming lake.

In 1880, Miles City had just 630 residents. Fort Keogh had a larger population than the adjacent town. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Gil Birmingham is an American actor of Comanche ancestry, best known for his portrayal of Billy Black in the The Twilight Saga film series.

Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.

We all develop our own ways of centering our lives on something. In our minds we each have a design of what we think we are capable of doing. If we want to be what we think we are capable of being, then we must hold our design firmly in our minds until it is secured as the focal point. Each life must have that focal point, that center of interest where all phases of life come together. A focal point gives strength and meaning to the smallest details of everyday living. Dimension and depth belong to the life that is centered. Though it may take many forms we must always have a "home" to return to, knowing that here are the roots, the things that really matter. There must be a blending of our lives with others. But to be happy with one's self, that focal point must be steady and true before we can feel contented that "all's right with the world."

CATTLE TRAIN, 1873. The shiny Kansas Pacific Rail Way locomotive led a train of mostly cattle cars. Huge numbers of longhorns roamed the Texas range after the civil war, and could not attract more than $2 a head. After Armour built his meat packing plant, Chicago prices reached as high as $40 a head.

Starting in 1867, cattle were driven to Kansas railheads for immediate shipment east. Later, cattle would be driven to the Northern Plains, where longhorns would graze on the open range for a year or two before shipment. The Texas cattle drives changed the American West and glorified the cowboy around the world. Photographer Robert Benecke captured the view on a glass-plate negative at Junction City, Kansas.
