In this age of freethinkers, many a business and political genius has asked, "Who can I join hands with that will do me the most good?" Almost any aggressive person can get his feet on the ladder of success. It is keeping them there that gets into artfulness. Because there is a time to think and act independently, a person's footing may get very shaky and very temporary. A law of cause and effect works minute by minute, and that simply says we get only when we give and we reap only what we sow. No one else can do for us what we have to do for ourselves. And no one else can keep us sharp and honest and respectful. It is our job. ~ Once I moved about like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all. ~

L.A. Huffman’s poetically framed vista, 1881. A stunning capture of the New (railroad) adjacent to the Old (tepee). Northern Pacific crew members and a Native American posed near Miles City, Montana. Smoke was coming from the steam locomotive on a cold morning. The freshly laid tracks used split logs as rail ties, and ballast was not yet put down. (Click image to enlarge/clarify.)

L.A. Huffman was not altogether supportive of the “Advance of Civilization,” which was his title for the print. Huffman professed a preference for the years of the open range before the arrival of the railroad and before barbed wire was used to fence lands.

Until the NP reached Miles City in 1881, freight had been delivered by steamboats during the June rise of the Yellowstone River and by bulltrains (the term for wagons pulled by oxen). Commentary and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.

TIPIS, 1912. The tipi at the left belonged to One Bull, the nephew and adopted son of Sitting Bull. Tipi at right belonged to Hunkpapa Chief Old Bull. All were at the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn in Eastern Montana.

With American flags in view, the pow wow at North Dakota’s Standing Rock Reservation likely took place on July 4. Native dance and ceremonies were typically forbidden, but the July 4 holiday provided a good excuse for traditional gatherings. Photographer Frank Bennett Fiske was best known for portraits of Sioux taken in his Fort Yates studio. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

SWALLOW BIRD was photographed by Edward S. Curtis in 1905. Swallow Bird’s studded hatchet handle was partially visible. His pompadour comb-back was colored with clay powder and fat. The Crow (called Apsaroke in earlier literature) identified themselves as Apsáalooke, Children of the Large Beaked Bird. PC users can click image to enlarge/clarify.

The portrait appeared in Volume 4 of Curtis’s monumental 20-volume “The North American Indian.” Curtis and his crew spent the winter at the Crow Indian Reservation, about an hour's drive southeast of Billings, Montana. A link in the first comment below will allow you to flip through Curtis’s 110 pages on the Crow. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
