Born June 22, 1952, on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, Mr. Greene is a 73 year old FIRST NATIONS Canadian actor who belongs to the ONEIDA tribe. He has worked on stage, in film, and in TV productions in Canada, the U.K., and the U.S.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his 1990 performance in "Dances with Wolves". Other films you may have seen him in include Thunderheart, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, the Green Mile, and Wind River. Graham Greene graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in 1974 & immediately began performing in professional theatre in Toronto and England, while also working as an audio technician for area rock bands. His TV debut was in 1979 and his screen debut in 1983. His acting career has now spanned over 4 decades & he remains as busy as ever. In addition to the Academy Award nomination for Dance with Wolves, he has been consistently recognized for his work, and also received nominations in 1994, 2000, 2004, 2006, and 2016. Graham Greene lives in Toronto, Canada, married since 1994, and has 1 adult daughter.

ROARING TWENTIES in rural Montana. In 1928, Helen Meisel, looking cosmopolitan in high heels and a short skirt, and Bob Pewitt posed in front of Jake Hog Farm, midway between Malta and Zortman. The two had come from Chicago to visit Joe Hartmann on his homestead. Hartman had likely picked them up at the Great Northern depot in Malta. Bob Pewitt married Joeโ€™s sister, Katherine, and stayed in the area. I have no information on Helen Meisel.

The carboard box at the right had held jars of pickled pigs feet. The sign for Old Gold ci******es proclaimed: โ€œNot a cough in a carload.โ€ Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

POLO on the CROW (Apsรกalooke) RESERVATION in Southeastern Montana, about 1915. An unidentified Crow rider held a couple polo balls and his wooden mallet.

By 1884, British expatriates, usually remittance men, near Miles City (MT) were raising horses with hopes of exporting them for polo use. Polo matches and steeplechase events were held at various ranches within a dayโ€™s ride from Miles City. Polo had similar beginnings in the Sheridan/Big Horn (WY) area, and perhaps polo spread north to the Crow Reservation. The glass lantern slide resides in the Rev. L.A. Huffman first photographed Yellowstone National Park in 1882. He traveled 750+ miles (1200+ km) with packhorses so he could photograph the many wonders of the USA's first national park. The photo below was shot two decades later in 1902.

The horse and rider were bounding through the deep snow, with Huffman behind. Did you notice that the rider has no covering over his ears? Click or zoom to better see the details, the snow on the horse's hind quarters.

Although the Montana Historical Society cites Huffman, I am inclined to think the photo was by F.J. Haynes or one of his employees. Text and Photoshop restoration of the image by Gary Coffrin.

ROPE CORRAL, 1904. Cowhands typically used two or three different horses per day during pool roundups, which had reps from various ranches. The rope corral was used for the shift change. L.A. Huffmanโ€™s best shots were often beautiful framings of men at work. Huffman spent weeks traveling with the LU Bar, CK, Hat X, and XIT in Eastern Montana. Soon the pool roundup would be a thing of the past.

A roped horse was being led out. At the left, a cowboy rode toward five riders on the distant ridge. The range was unfenced and distances were great, so the fall beef roundup lasted a couple months. Gil Birmingham is an American actor of Comanche ancestry, best known for his portrayal of Billy Black in the The Twilight Saga film series.

Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.
