"I Am Not a Safe Place for Cowards"

If you want comfort,
go find a candle
and a warm cup of tea.
I am the flame itself,
I don’t offer light without heat.

I’ve been loved half-heartedly
by people who mistook my softness for surrender,
but I’ve learned to bite back
and keep the blood.

You don’t get to hold me
and then drop me
because I asked you to
see me fully.

I don’t come in pieces anymore.
It’s all or nothing now, even when I am silently broken.
And I won’t apologize
for being whole or pretending to be.
