Texas is facing one of the most critical animal welfare crises in the nation? Every single year, an estimated 568,000 dogs and cats enter Texas shelters—often packed well beyond their intended capacity. Shockingly, roughly 82,000 of these animals are euthanized annually, placing the Lone Star State among the highest in the country for shelter euthanasia. Beyond the shelter doors, the daily reality is just as devastating: countless stray and abandoned dogs roam rural roads, highways, and neighborhoods, struggling to survive on their own.
But these heartbreaking numbers don't have to be our permanent reality. While communities have worked hard to save 77% of shelter pets, we still have a long way to go—Texas needs an additional 46,600 dogs and 32,000 cats to find homes to reach "no-kill" status statewide. This isn't just a shelter problem; it's a community crisis that we have the power to solve.
