Happy National Pie Day! Celebrate this important occasion with a new, delicious recipe. You can thank us tomorrow when you're eating pie for breakfast.

All-American Apple Pie

Pastry for a two-crust pie

3/4-1 cup sugar

2 tablespoons flour or 2 teaspoons tapioca

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

6 cups apples, peeled and sliced

2 tablespoons butter

Preheat oven to 425 F.

Combine sugar, flour or tapioca, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Sprinkle over sliced apples and mix lightly.

Heap into 10-inch pie plate lined with bottom crust. Dot with butter. Roll out top crust and place over apples. Seal crusts together, trim and flute edges. Cut vents in top crust to allow steam to escape.

Brush top of pie with water and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake 50-60 minutes or until crust is browned and apples tender.

Cool and serve.

Americans are definitely fans of the sometimes salty, sometimes smooth treat. Did you know that the average American consumes about 31 pounds of cheese each year? That may seem like a lot, but for the average French person it’s 50 pounds!

JANUARY 10 is Houseplant Appreciation Day!

By the 10th of January, the holidays are a distant, happy memory. We have put the decorations away. Now, our houses all look kinda plain, and drab inside. As you look around the house, something catches your eye. It's over there, in the corner of the room. It's still green, but it sure looks dry. And, its drooping a bit. Why, it's a houseplant! Funny, but with all of the holiday hubabuloo, you've all but forgotten your houseplants.

Well aren't your houseplants lucky that the tenth of January has arrived!? Today is THE day to get back to tending to, and loving your houseplants. It's also a day to appreciate just how special and important houseplants are to you. As gardener's we need to have our hands in some dirt. Caring for them, gives us that opportunity. After all, its a long way to spring, when we can get out into the garden again.
