More and more schools and universities ask how to incorporate DEI work into marketing and communications. It's a process, and an evolution.

Ultimately, Truth & Reconciliation must guide the DEI process - especially when led by people of privilege.

We must grow comfortable with being uncomfortable. We must listen more than we speak - to people who live the uncomfortable truths of centuries of colonization, discrimination and displacement.

This Native American Heritage Month, start by considering whether a Land Acknowledgement Statement on your website is enough. Wouldn't it be more impactful to reach out to local indigenous communities and build mutually beneficial relationships - where you can learn what they see as true reconciliation?

It’s easier to market when you KNOW why people come to you.

Devote a month to assessing how people view your school and how you can share their outcomes and experiences through marketing channels to attract wide appeal.

Reflect on what brings families to your school, and what keeps them. Interview parents and students if you don’t know! Get as specific as you can in articulating the benefits of your school, and what makes you stand out from all the educational options.

Tell a great story about your school!
