We tell ourselves we live in a world of facts. But the structures that hold civilization together — money, law, borders, human rights — are not facts at all. They are agreements. Fictions that enough people believe long enough to build on. That capacity to create and sustain shared stories is the single thing that made large-scale human cooperation possible. Narrative is not decoration. It is the oldest infrastructure we have.

And absence, repeated often enough, reads as instability. The data is consistent: brands that maintained cadence through downturns grew while competitors who went dark lost ground they never recovered.

Presence is the non-negotiable. Content can flex. Voice stays constant.

Goodhart's Law says that when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. Brand strategy has its own version. Engagement rate becomes the target, so content gets optimized for engagement — shorter, more reactive, more familiar. The number goes up. Understanding goes down. The fix isn't better data. It's asking a different question before the data enters the room: what do we want this audience to understand about us?
