SMARInsights hires Kael Ecord as Research Analyst

Kael Ecord has joined market research firm SMARInsights as a Research Analyst. Ecord’s impressive technical skills give the team a competitive advantage to dig deep into data-driven insights that plot the future of the tourism industry.

Ecord is a recent graduate of the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, & Engineering at Indiana University, where he earned his Master of Science in Applied Data Science. He comes to SMARInsights with experience in CRM analysis, media and stats coordination research, and data engineering.

Nick Falkenstein, VP of Analytics, shares his excitement in welcoming Ecord to SMARInsights. “He comes to us with an impressive academic research resume. His informatics background will enhance our data visualization and database initiatives. He has shown an immediate understanding of our analytical approaches used to uncover key insights that drive effective decision-making. He is sure to bring a fresh perspective to the destination research we have been doing for decades.”

About Kael

Ecord is passionate about the connection between mathematics and sport and has involved himself in several related data analytics projects—including research to calculate optimal marathon pacing, a web app to provide WNBA shot chart visualizations, and an NCAA transfer portal analysis. Additionally, his experience in competitive running and data science helped him build a data visualization tool for the IU Indy Men’s Cross-Country team in preparation for the 2024 NCAA regionals. His data led to optimized team workouts and training strategies.

Kael is excited to gain new and valuable skills at SMARInsights while bringing his own unique knowledge to the team.

SMARInsights Hires Ashley McHugh as Research Director

Ashley McHugh has joined the SMARInsights team as Research Director. She will lead the team to leverage data and deliver quantifiable results that drive strategic marketing decisions.

McHugh served the past 8 years directing research at Memphis Tourism, where she built a world-class business intelligence program that harnessed analytics, research, and data to strategically transform how the DMO imagined the future of tourism in Memphis. As a direct result, Memphis Tourism was able to access hyperlocal custom insights that were used to grow the local visitor economy, attract new visitors, and amplify marketing impact.

Ashley continues to speak at domestic and international events as a thought-leader in the travel industry, illuminating the intersections of technology and tourism.

“Ashley has run an impressive research program for Memphis Tourism,” says Alisha Valentine, Vice President. “She's a leader in the industry, and we're thrilled to have her expertise at SMARInsights. Jordan Musall has joined the SMARInsights (Strategic Marketing & Research Insights LLC) team following an 8-year tenure with Hamilton County Tourism where he was the Data Intelligence Manager.
Jordan graduated from Ohio Dominican University with a degree in graphic design and started his career as a digital marketing manager. His passion for data analysis and expertise in marketing and design have placed him at the leading edge of data visualization and mobile data analysis. He has presented webinars as a guest of Destinations International, the Travel and Tourism Research Association, and Simpleview on topics including the event impact calculator and geolocation data.
“Jordan has been in the shoes of our clients,” said SMARInsights President David M. Seiferth. “He has a keen understanding of how to leverage data for optimal marketing impacts. And he has worked closely with policy makers to inform strategic destination decisions.”

This year can be described by a list of words we are all pretty tired of using and hearing including… unprecedented challenges.

2020 has been harder and longer than anyone could have anticipated, but together we have discovered that we are stronger and more resilient than we might have known.

We have faced this year caring for each other with good humor and flexibility. We look forward to saying goodbye to 2020 and welcoming a new year, filled with hope and appreciation.

STEPHANIE PACE BROWN JOINS SMARInsights AS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Stephanie brings over 30 years of experience in the tourism industry spanning a wide variety of tourism organizations. With experience at DMOs, attractions and both the state and local level, Stephanie understands the industry and the many facets of a successful tourism program.

“At SMARInsights our goal is to provide clients with research and information and to provide the expertise to help them apply that information. Stephanie’s breadth and depth of experience will make her a valued asset to our clients,” said David Seiferth, President of SMARInsights.

Stephanie started her career in economic and marketing research with the Ohio Office of Tourism and Colonial Williamsburg. Data driven decisions were the foundation of her work as Vice President of Public Affairs for Mount Vernon, and as the CEO of two destination organizations – Alexandria, Virginia and Asheville, North Carolina.

Stephanie has gained a deep appreciation of the multi-faceted tourism industry and has served on the boards of the US Travel Association, Destinations International and as Chair of the Destinations International Foundation. She has assumed state leadership roles on the North Carolina Travel and Tourism Board, the North Carolina Travel and Tourism Coalition and the North Carolina Travel Industry Association. On a local level, she has recently served on the boards of the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association, Greater Asheville Regional Airport, and the Asheville Riverfront Redevelopment Commission.

During her most recent post as president and CEO of Explore Asheville, Stephanie led the development of Asheville as a national travel destination and guided its product development efforts. She is a passionate advocate for the power of travel to benefit communities, and for the importance of research and analytics to guide tourism promotion investments.

“I’ve worked with Stephanie since her first tourism job in Ohio and I’ve always been impressed with her ability to understand what’s happening in the industry and to be one step ahead in terms of what’s next. It will be great to work with her on a daily basis to serve our clients,” said Denise Miller, EVP at SMARInsights.

Stephanie will start work with SMARInsights on July 9th and work from the Indianapolis office.
