What if I told you there's a ghost town hiding in the middle of Cape Ann — and that a man who predicted the 1929 stock market crash spent the Great Depression hiring unemployed workers to chisel motivational messages into boulders there?

This is Dogtown Common in Gloucester, and it's one of the most remarkable places on the entire North Shore.

Once upon a time, Dogtown was THE place to live on Cape Ann. Over 100 families called it home. It was the most prosperous inland settlement in Gloucester — farmers, craftspeople, prominent families all building lives among those giant glacial boulders.

Then the fishing industry exploded on the coast. Roads bypassed the village. Families moved away one by one. The last resident — a freed enslaved man named Cornelius Finson — was found frozen in a cellar hole in 1830 and taken to the poorhouse. The remaining dogs roamed wild... and the village became "Dogtown."

Here's the twist most people don't know:

Roger Babson — born in Gloucester, founder of Babson College, and the man who predicted the 1929 crash in a famous September speech (they called it the "Babson Break") — spent the Depression years hiring 35 unemployed stonecutters to carve inspirational mottoes into 24 giant boulders throughout Dogtown's abandoned woodland.

"GET A JOB." "COURAGE." "HELP MOTHER." "KEEP OUT OF DEBT." "IF WORK STOPS, VALUES DECAY."

His family said he was disgracing them. He said it gave him fresh air, exercise, and sunshine. The boulders are still there today — deep in 3,600 acres of protected wilderness you can hike right now.

Today is Wednesday — Community Spotlight day. And I genuinely believe Dogtown is the most fascinating story on the North Shore that almost nobody knows.

Marblehead, Massachusetts — and a story I can't stop thinking about. 🎣

You've seen that painting a thousand times. George Washington, standing in a boat, crossing the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776.

But here's what they didn't tell you in history class:

Those rowers were North Shore fishermen. Marblehead men.

Colonel John Glover led a regiment of weather-beaten Marblehead mariners who saved George Washington's army not once — but TWICE.

First, in August 1776, they evacuated 9,500 Continental troops off Long Island in a single night, slipping past the British fleet in the fog without losing a single man or cannon. A British officer wrote: "To my inexpressible astonishment, the Rebel army have all escaped."

Then on Christmas night, through a howling nor'easter, those same men rowed 3,000 soldiers across the ice-choked Delaware River. The victory at Trenton followed. The first real American win of the entire war.

And one more thing: Glover's regiment was one of America's first integrated military units — one-third of its muster rolls listed men as "dark complexioned," including free African Americans and Native Americans. That African American figure in the famous Leutze painting? He represents the reality of who Marblehead was.

When the war ended, President Washington made a special detour to Marblehead in 1789 — just to say thank you.

John Glover's tomb is still at Old Burial Hill. You can visit it today.
