“I’m grateful for CalOptima Health because I have a new heart, and it gave me a second chance at living a quality life.”
Those are the words of Richard Bines, a CalOptima Health member featured in our recent video docuseries, who went from undiagnosed heart failure to a life-saving transplant and a renewed chance at life with his two kids.
Richard’s story is part of our CalOptima Health member story series, which just earned a Silver Addy Award from the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Orange County for Branded Content & Entertainment. At Maricich Health, we’re proud of this recognition because it reflects what healthcare communications can be: human, honest and rooted in real impact.
The member-focused docuseries, produced in collaboration with CalOptima Health, is designed to showcase real outcomes through real voices. No scripts. Just authentic storytelling that reflects the impact of whole-person care.
When Richard arrived at the ER barely able to walk, he learned he had already experienced multiple heart attacks and was in heart failure. What happened next made all the difference. CalOptima Health’s coordinated care model moved fast, approving his transfer and treatment before he even arrived at the transplant center and removing barriers at the most critical moment.
Through partnerships with leading academic medical centers and transplant programs such as UC San Diego Health’s Center for Transplantation, CalOptima Health ensures members have access to advanced, life-saving care when they need it most.
Richard’s story is a powerful reminder that access, coordination and advocacy can truly save lives. For us, that’s what this work is all about.
