We celebrate Kendra Porter '95, who has built a truly multifaceted career in the world of fashion, business, and sports. She is the founder of Honor You HYS, Image Consultant & Wardrobe Stylist , a TEDx speaker, award-winning image consultant, wardrobe stylist for NBC Sports and the Olympics , and an adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology .

Kendra's advice: "Look at what you want to do and figure out how to make that happen. Find the overlap between your skills and what you love. Be self-motivated. Ask for support. You can create degrees, careers, anything!"

At UMass Amherst , she left engineering in her third year for a bigger vision. She designed her own major in Promotional Marketing Management, blending Marketing, Advertising and Communications, Consumer Studies, and Sports Management with Hospitality and Tourism - a degree that has proved invaluable throughout her career. She created her own curriculum and courses through independent studies in undergrad and grad school. That same instinct to build something from scratch led her to launch her own company, taking a 360° approach to personal branding for executives, founders, and experts.

Kendra believes support makes all the difference for success. "Friends are good — they provide emotional support. Experts are better; they have the tools and experience to get you to the next level. Find people with the knowledge you need and who will champion you to the next level."

Two years ago, I was sitting in the audience watching powerful Black and Brown women from across the country step onto a stage. These were 5-, 6-, 7-, and multi–7-figure business owners.

I had never seen so many high-achieving women of color in one room. It changed what felt possible.
This fall, I stepped onto that same stage for .

Still feels surreal.

Being part of this , surrounded by women who are where I’m going has shifted my in ways I didn’t even realize I needed. The move from to isn’t just strategy… it’s identity.

Grateful for the rooms.
Grateful for the coaching.
Grateful to now be part of the community I once admired from the audience.

As , we are whole people.
Many of us choose this life because we love what we do and because of the flexibility and freedom can bring.

But entrepreneurship doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

At the end of May, my mom had a .
If you know my story, you know I’ve been a for the past 10 years for both of my parents, who have lived with . No one prepares you for this chapter of life. It’s a 24/7 reality I never expected and one that reshapes everything.

There are good days.
There are hard days.
There are days I have the bandwidth… and days I don’t.

If you’re a caregiver, I want you to know this: you don’t have to do this alone.
There are ways to get support. There are resources. And asking for help is not weakness, it’s wisdom.

Today, I’m deeply grateful for the team of who support the care of my mom. We’ve been blessed with extraordinary people who have cared for my parents with compassion, patience, and heart. They have a special gift and they help lighten a load that can feel incredibly heavy.

Thank you for all that you do in caring for our family.

This, too, is the reality of and a powerful reminder of the importance of building a home team, not just a business one.
