On February 17th, Brittney Griner was accused of having v**e cartridges and cannabis oil by Russian authorities. Since then, she has been detained and faces up to 10 years in prison. ​​​​​​​​

Brittney is not only a world renowned basketball player, but an openly gay woman of color imprisoned in a country that is notoriously intolerant of the LGBTQ+ community. Griner’s detainment is becoming widely politicized, however her story remains relatively unknown, with few publications addressing her plight. Brittney Griner inches closer and closer to becoming a pawn of diplomacy, instead of a person. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
It’s imperative that Brittney’s story becomes known. The relative silence of the sports industry and mainstream media is perplexing. I just can’t help but wonder “If Brittney were a white woman, would people care?”
