The Historic Barn & Farm Foundation recently hired me to take photos for their book. Please check out their tour in the link below:
The Youghiogheny Valley – Where Farming Fathered Industry.”
On Friday, June 10th, they will tour West Overton (where Henry Clay Frick was born), which consists of 20 buildings, almost all brick, three of which are barns, plus the Overholt family’s large barn-like distillery. The first story of the Distillery building will contain an extensive new exhibit on agriculture and related topics at West Overton. Registration will be inside the large barn, possibly the largest brick barn in Pennsylvania , now most frequently used as a wedding venue. Friday evening, there will be a banquet at the large barn with a presentation on how important the Yough Valley was in the early settlement, agricultural development, and industrialization of Western Pennsylvania .
On Saturday, June 11th, they will have the annual all-day HBFF bus tour, 8AM-5PM, touring five barns and the reconstruction of George Washington’s Grist Mill at Perryopolis, plus an Eastern European lunch at National Register-listed St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church of Perryopolis, where you can sneak a peak at the sanctuary. This was Andy Warhol’s brother’s church. The priest currently serving there grew up in Ukraine and came here as an adult. There will also be some interpretation of at least four other barns/sites we will see only from the exterior.
On Sunday, June 12th, there will be a mini-tour (drive-on-your-own) of two significant barns in the Greensburg area: The huge Steel Barn at Hannastown Farm (near the reconstructed 1780s log village of Hannas Town , which was originally part of this farm), and the Pollins Barn and Farmstead at Sewickley Manor Farm (next to the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds).
Each year, HBFF produces a tour book about the barns visited on that year’s tour. The book discusses the heritage and styles of barn architecture in that area, at 72 pages in all.
