The hero’s of yesteryears - Wild Willie Borsch

One of the most colorful and admired figures in drag racing history, earning legendary status during the 1960s and early 1970s. Born in 1930, Borsch became known as the ultimate "working man's hero," proving that determination, ingenuity, and driving talent could compete with teams backed by far greater financial resources. His fearless style behind the wheel and charismatic personality made him a fan favorite wherever drag racing enthusiasts gathered.

Borsch achieved fame as the driver of the famous Marcellus & Borsch "Winged Express" AA/Fuel Altered, a homebuilt race car that became one of the most recognizable machines in drag racing. Partnering with teammate and builder "Mousie" Marcellus, Willie campaigned the car primarily in California, rarely traveling the national circuit. Despite competing in a sportsman-class vehicle with little sponsorship support, the team gained international recognition through their remarkable performances and innovative engineering.

What the Winged Express lacked in funding, it more than compensated for with raw horsepower, creativity, and determination. The car featured a controversial overhead airfoil design that was years ahead of its time and closely resembled the aerodynamic wings that would later become standard equipment on dragsters and Funny Cars. This willingness to challenge conventional thinking helped establish the team as innovators and earned them a permanent place in drag racing history.

Perhaps Willie Borsch's most enduring trademark was his extraordinary driving style. As the powerful altered-wheelbase roadster fought for traction and stability, Borsch often guided it down the track with one hand on the steering wheel while using the other to manage the controls. His ability to maintain command of one of the most unpredictable race cars ever built became legendary among fans and fellow racers alike. Photographs and films of his one-handed driving remain some of the most iconic images from drag racing's golden era.

Willie Borsch's legacy extends far beyond race wins and elapsed times. He represented the spirit of grassroots drag racing, demonstrating that innovation, courage, and skill could overcome financial limitations. Alongside Mousie Marcellus and the Winged Express, he created one of the most celebrated stories in motorsports history. Decades after his passing in 1991, "Wild Willie" remains an enduring symbol of the creativity, excitement, and rebellious spirit that helped define the sport of drag racing.
