I recently participated in an elementary school Career Day and shared what I do as a web and digital designer.
Did every student fully understand it? Probably not. 😅 But that made the experience even more worthwhile.
A few students immediately connected with it, especially those who already enjoy art, drawing, creativity, and technology. It was exciting to show them that those interests can eventually translate into careers like web design, app design, branding, and other digital creative work.
It was also a great exercise for me. Explaining my career to elementary students forced me to rethink my usual elevator pitch. Kids are not easily impressed, so figuring out how to make what I do simple, relatable, and interesting was both humbling and helpful.
One of my favorite parts was hearing the app ideas they came up with. Some were genuinely creative.
They may not remember every detail of what a digital designer does, but if even a few walked away thinking, “That sounds cool. I could do that,” then it was worth it.
