This Florida beach has “rocks” made of ancient sand 🪨 SAVE this for your next beach day!

They look like lava rock, but the black formations at Blackrock Beach aren’t rock at all. They’re ancient sand and soil, called spodosol, that packed down and hardened over thousands of years. It only covers about 3.5% of land in the entire U.S.

Why this beach is so unusual:
🪨 The waves carved the formations into ledges, pools, and shapes you won’t see on a normal Florida beach.
🌳 Fallen, sun-bleached oak trees line the shoreline, giving it a wild, otherworldly look.
🥾 You get there on a half-mile trail through the maritime forest on Big Talbot Island.

5 hidden gems in Jax that cost $0 🌿 Comment JAX for our full neighborhood tours!

Jacksonville has the largest urban park system in the country, and some of the best spots in it won’t cost you a thing.

Here are five we keep going back to:
🚲 Timucuan Trail
 A paved, mostly off-road bike path along A1A that’s part of the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway, winding through maritime forest, past Blackrock Beach, and over the marsh. Free to ride, though some state park lots along the way charge a small parking fee.

🛤️ Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail
 A flat, fully paved 15-mile trail built on an old railroad corridor, with plenty of free parking. Ride a little over 6 miles to reach the Camp Milton Historic Preserve, a Civil War site.

🌳 Spanish Pond Trail
 A shaded walk under massive oaks inside the Timucuan Preserve, where Timucuan and Spanish history come alive right off Fort Caroline Road.

🏝️ Exchange Island
 A secret 34-acre island in the middle of the St. Johns River with hiking paths, picnic pavilions, and panoramic skyline views. Reachable only by boat, kayak, or jet ski from the Arlington Road Boat Ramp.

🚣 Castaway Island Preserve
 A 900-foot raised boardwalk with two observation overlooks across the salt marsh, plus a kayak launch at the end of the boardwalk at low tide.

Most people drive over the Mathews Bridge every day and never realize they’re looking at a hidden 34-acre playground. This is Exchange Island, a secret park tucked right in the middle of the St. Johns River. 🌊🌉
If you’re looking for an off-the-grid vibe without leaving the city, this is it. But there’s a catch: you can’t drive here.

🛶 How to get there:
📍 Access: Boat, kayak, or jet ski.
📍 Launch Point: Head to the Arlington Road Boat Ramp for the quickest trip across.

✨ Why it’s worth the trip:
