Dramatic Newport Bermuda Race in 2024 !
June 21:
70 miles after the start: Proteus - At 0150, Will Oaxley, navigator onboard Proteus, the JV72, informed us that they had dismasted. Fortunately, all crew members are safe. They have successfully cut the mast away without causing any damage to the hull and are currently motoring back to Newport due back midday Saturday
June 23rd:
At 0300 this morning, Alliance USA 52770 J/122, skippered by Eric Irwin and Mary Martin, reported dealing with water ingress via a rudder post and subsequently decided to abandon ship. Multiple competitors stopped racing and stood by to assist as needed. By 0400, all crew were safely aboard the J/121 Ceilidh, which will now resume racing with the Alliance crew for Bermuda with an estimated arrival of Tuesday midday.
June 24th:
Line honors boats finished the Newport Bermuda Race, dodging rain squalls in 8-10 knot winds. π§οΈβ΅ For the monohulls, πΊπΈ Pyewacket (Roy Disney's Volvo 70) crossed the line at 01:37:35 EDT with an elapsed time of 2d 11h 17m 35s.
June 25th:
Gunga Din, a Swedish Yachts 41 owned by Robert Fye and Paul Cunningham, with a total crew of seven, had to abandon ship 80 miles from Bermuda due to water ingress. All crew members were successfully transferred, unharmed, to Desna, a Tartan 37 owned by Adam Van Voorhis with seven also aboard. All 14 are now making their way towards Bermuda expected late tonight. It is unknown at this time what precisely caused the water ingress.
