We would like to take a moment to recognize Curt, our fearless leader, for everything he does behind the scenes—because while he’s always present and involved, much of his impact happens quietly.

Last week, Curt was named the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of the Year, and we truly couldn’t be more proud. If you know Curt, you know this recognition is more than deserved.

Curt has been a small business owner for nearly 25 years, constantly adapting, building, and pouring into Joplin Greenhouse and the people around him. What started in 2001 as a humble garden center has grown into a thriving community hub—with three coffee shop locations, over 50 employees, and a passion rooted in doing things ourselves, doing them well, and doing them with heart.

From launching new additions like Outpost Coffee JGH and Bloom JGH to expanding the vision of Joplin Greenhouse & The Coffee Shop Curt’s leadership has helped shape every layer of the experience. Even Joplin Greenhouse at The Farm which supplies much of the product you see in the shop, grew from his belief in building something meaningful from the ground up. He also plays a big role in guiding and directing our creativity here at In House Marketing which brings the Joplin Greenhouse story to life each day.

From organizing hurricane relief efforts to hosting fundraisers and supporting local schools, Curt’s influence extends far beyond our walls. And through it all, he leads with generosity—not for recognition, but because it’s simply who he is.

When he’s not working (which is rare), he’s probably… still working. But he somehow still finds time for his family, including weekly Wilder’s Wednesdays with his wife, Jill, and championing local businesses with the same passion he brings to work each day.

One of Curt’s more unique hobbies is discovering and researching exotic, high-end, or what we like to call “boujee” waters to carry at the coffee shop. This passion really took off after the success of our “Boujee Water” commercial—if you’ve seen it, you know!

Curt has empowered so many of us—team members, customers, friends—to show up fully and believe we’re capable of more. He leads with humility, invests in people, and lives out what it means to serve.

We’re lucky to know him. Joplin is lucky to have him. And this award? 110% earned.

PS: The award banquet was Disco-themed, and if you’re wondering why Curt is rocking his flower power shirt, that’s why. Nothing says “Outstanding Citizen” quite like a little flower power flair!

Happy birthday In House Marketing !!! Today we celebrated one official year of being in business!

I’ve been thinking about how to summarize the last year of business into something somewhat concise and it’s not easy y’all! Honestly I feel like I could write a whole book, but I won’t do that to ya. Instead I’d like you say thank you! Thank you Curt for trusting me to run with this idea and empowering me to “do it scared” when it comes to all things business and life.

Because I was having such a hard time putting words to the last year of course I asked Curt to help. He replied “A year and a half ago Lily had a brilliant idea. At the time she was the Marketing Manager for Joplin Greenhouse and saw the success of our own in house marketing efforts, she came to me with this idea “Why not help out businesses that have similar business practices do the same?” And just like that In House was born.

For the past year Lily has amazed me in how she has taken this idea, worked tirelessly and created an awesome business. Along with building a great team around her all with the intention of supporting other small businesses. I just wanted to say thank you to the businesses that have allowed Lily and her team to work with them and create something so exciting.

So that leads me to the next round of thank you’s. Thank you to every small business that has trusted us with their marketing efforts in any way. Thank you for providing endless opportunities to learn and grow. I’d like to give a special shoutout to Runaround Running & Lifestyle and the Barlett family for being here since the start, and for being patient with me as I have grown over the past year. I remember being SO nervous the first time I went to take pictures at the store. I hated most of the photos and it challenged me to improve my photography skills.

Finally I’d like to thank Jaelyn and Courtney for being a part of our team. Thank you for caring about small businesses in a way that is so special to me and our clients. Thank you for being incredibly patient with me as I grow as a leader and teaching me so much everyday. I’m so excited to see where In House Marketing takes all of us!

Hi y'all! As I sit here in the office reflecting on the small business we are growing, I feel incredibly blessed, honored, and humbled, to say the least, and I'd like to take a moment to give a whole lot of thanks.

First, thank you, Curt, for being a fearless leader and etching the “do it with fear” mentality into all of us. I will forever admire your ability to be unapologetically yourself and to always stay true to your values. I cannot express how grateful I am for your trust in me to lead this business. Thank you for always providing a safe and healthy workspace for your people. I can confidently say on behalf of all of us that this does not go unnoticed.

Next, I’d like to brag on Jaelyn for a minute. From the moment I met Jaelyn, I knew that she is naturally a very talented creative mind; she surprises me with uniquely creative ideas every day. Although Jaelyn likes to remind me that I teach her more than she learns in school most days (don’t we all love college) I am forever grateful for the countless life lessons I have learned through teaching and guiding her. I am grateful for her patience with me. A lot of times, when Jaelyn is learning something about the business for the first time, I am humbly reminded that it is also my first time explaining or teaching a topic. I must give her credit because sometimes I feel like I do a terrible job of explaining my vision for something, but she pulls it off in the exact way or better than I imagine! Thank you, Jaelyn, for trusting in me. I appreciate you so much.
Of course, I cannot thank our clients enough for trusting in our small (but mighty) team here at In House Marketing ! I am continuously encouraged by your stories and willingness to share expertise from your journey with small business.

Lastly, THANK YOU to everyone that has listened to me vent or break down in moments of feeling overwhelmed. I’m sure there are many more moments like that to come!

It has not even been a year and In House Marketing has already taught me so many lessons. I have been pushed outside of my comfort zone to the point that my “comfort zone” includes so much more than it did nine months ago.

Let’s talk about stories.

At the start of managing Joplin Greenhouse & The Coffee Shop social media accounts, I knew that stories would be key in helping to connect with and engage their growing audience. We began to share updates of new arrival plants from the farm and greenhouse walkthroughs with Emily so people could get to know our products and the people behind them.

These posts have been such a success that customers now recognize Emily in public and can relate with her on their favorite houseplants. One time a customer stopped Emily in the grocery store and told her “Your videos have made me so excited to try growing tomatoes!”

This goes to show that ‘stories’, both on Instagram and Facebook, but also just storytelling in general, are an incredibly powerful way of creating a sense of community.
