3 Alaska projects selected for SK grant funding by the American Fisheries Advisory Committee (AFAC)
NOAA Fisheries announced the selection of 21 projects for more than $8.9 million under the 2025 Saltonstall-Kennedy (S-K) Competitive Grants Program. The projects fall into three priorities: Promotion and Marketing; Development, Infrastructure, and Capacity Building; and Science or Technology that Enhances Sustainable U.S. Fisheries.
Demand for S-K funding was robust once again. Initially, NOAA received 197 pre-proposals. Of those, subject matter experts reviewed 109 full proposals requesting more than $46 million during the Technical Merit Review phase. The American Fisheries Advisory Committee reviewed the technical reviewer comments and scores, and ultimately recommended the top 21 projects to the Secretary of Commerce.
The breakdown of funding by region is listed below.
Alaska: 3 projects for $1,369,194
Greater Atlantic: 5 projects for $1,875,609
Pacific Islands: 3 projects for $1,245,793
Southeast/Gulf of America: 6 projects for $2,567,904
West Coast: 4 projects $1,849,525
For more than 40 years, NOAA has awarded grant funding for projects under the S-K program to individuals, institutions, organizations, and businesses across the country. S-K funds help address the needs of fishing communities, support economic opportunities, and build and maintain resilient and sustainable fisheries.
