Arise .net
So, in the early internet days .com stood for a commercial domain, any ecommerce or trading company basically. Whereas .net stood for a business that was a network, maybe a hosting company, telecoms company or email service provider.
Then enter the new TLD’s (top level domains) covering everything from .AAA to .ZW there are some 1,499 extensions to choose from!! See ICANN’s complete list here.
Sadly, most of the new TLD’s have not taken off the way the purchasers of these TLD’s would have hoped. There are a couple that have done OK, the most popular being Google’s .xyz with Colombia’s .co doing well and new kid on the block .io (British Indian Ocean Territory, adopted because of the computer science “IO”, an abbreviation for Input / Output) doing well too.
As I write this .coms still account for over 52% of all domains sold.
A .com domain as far as we can see, will always be the #1 domain TLD, it being one of the first three to be released. .com, .net and .org. The .org TLD being created originally for nonprofit organizations.
In the “old Days” choosing the right domain extension was crucial because it could have had an impact on your branding and search rankings. Nowadays the content of the site is the #1 Priority for ranking / SEO purposes. Which after all is the way it should be. Memorability is now the next most important factor when choosing a domain.
In March 2021 we saw the sale of Poker.net for some $750,000, with other .net domain sales creating a steady buzz within the premium Domains Reseller industry and raising some eyebrows at the prices they are achieving. We all know it is the poor relative of .com BUT we think for any domain investors out there its worth holding on to your .nets as we are expecting a steady increase in prices.
If .com is #1 then .net is #2 for sure and with every memorable correctly spelled and incorrectly spelled .coms pretty much used up, .net must be the way to go. We have a good feeling about this……………….
Looking forward to reading this in 2022 :0)
