99% of modern advertising hides behind trends. Here's how to be the 1% that sets them:
Every industry has its advertising norms. Some are necessary, like legal and warning statements (looking at you, pharmaceutical companies). Most, however, aren't. These norms exist because someone, a long time ago, decided this is how you show or talk about a product. And that became the norm.
Want to see two of the biggest offenders? Look at any fragrance or jewelry ads (except Old Spice). Seriously, they've been advertising the same way since I was a kid, and that was a REALLY long time ago.
Be like Old Spice. How? Look at your industry and ask "why?" about everything. Then ask, "how can we do it a little differently?" And do it.
If you break free from the norms, your target audience will take notice. They'll appreciate the fresh perspective and you'll notice increased sales. Before you know it, you'll be setting the norms everyone else follows.
What do you think? What other industries have norms that need disrupting?
