Food as Medicine programs help close that gap by providing nutritious food, not just recommendations. Through our FaM Program, eligible clients experiencing high-risk pregnancies can receive grocery benefits and nutrition support.

Trauma-informed communication asks more of us than simply avoiding the wrong words.

At Black Mamas Matter Alliance’s 2026 Black Maternal Health Conference, conversations about communication after birth loss and trauma emphasized pausing before default reassurance, acknowledging what happened without minimizing it, asking for consent before offering advice or moving forward, and giving families meaningful choices.

For us, those principles apply directly to how doulas, community health workers, and staff communicate during pregnancy loss, traumatic birth, pregnancy after loss, and difficult postpartum experiences. Better communication is part of better care.

We joined maternal health leaders, birth workers, clinicians, researchers, advocates, and community organizations at the Black Maternal Health Conference in Atlanta.

Across sessions, the strongest ideas were not isolated to one discipline. Trust, community knowledge, responsive program design, maternal mental health, nutrition, reproductive autonomy, and sustained postpartum support all intersected. That matters for our work because learning is only useful if it shapes what we do next.

We are grateful to Black Mamas Matter Alliance for creating a space where those perspectives could challenge, reinforce, and sharpen one another!

Make sure MO HealthNet knows you are pregnant.

FB/LI: Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, many adults covered through Missouri’s Medicaid expansion will have to document work or other qualifying activities to keep their coverage.

Pregnancy and the 12-month postpartum period are exempt. If you become pregnant while covered by MO HealthNet, report your pregnancy as soon as possible so your eligibility can be reviewed for pregnancy coverage and its additional benefits.

Report the change through mydss.mo.gov or call 855-373-4636.
