World Rivers Day 🌊
World Rivers Day is about raising awareness of the role rivers play in keeping landscapes, wildlife and communities alive, and of how much depends on their health.
For me, two African rivers immediately stand out: the mighty Zambezi and the powerful Nile (although the Mara, the Luangwa, the kafue and the Kavango well the list really is endless are of course always worthy of mention too. But both the mighty Zambezi and the magnificent Nile have played a big part of my Africa working life and never fail to amaze me.
The Zambezi feeds wetlands and floodplains, supports huge concentrations of wildlife, provides water and livelihoods for communities, and then, of course, makes that extraordinary plunge at Victoria Falls. I have seen it wide and glassy, low and exposed, full and fast-flowing, and it never feels quite the same.
The Nile has a completely different energy. In Uganda, it feels raw and powerful, rushing through the country and linking lakes, forests, villages and wildlife areas along the way. It is one of those rivers that makes you stop and think about scale: how far that water travels, and how many people and places depend on it before it eventually reaches the Mediterranean.
That is really what World Rivers Day is about. Not simply admiring rivers because they are beautiful, but understanding what they support, what they connect and why looking after them matters.
The mighty Zambezi and the powerful Nile: two very different rivers, both absolutely extraordinary and so many more still to explore too.
