Despite 55% of retailers believing shoppers trust that their precious online orders will be fulfilled, only 38% of shoppers share in that confidence. Labor, tech and general process issues are all on the improvement to-do list for retailers. However, shopper DIY efforts like researching prices and inventory before hitting stores are helping bridge the gap. And retailers are acting accordingly, adopting new tech and assigning more employees to online order help, basically shopping for customers, and generally helping brick-and-mortars act as mini-fulfillment centers.

More than 214 million Americans plan to shower friends and family with gifts this holiday season. And according to a poll, a whopping 75% of these merry shoppers will be swiping an average of $620 on credit cards. In addition, 18% of folks say they’re planning on taking advantage of buy now, pay later services, with that number jumping to 36% for millennials. Interestingly, 17% of shoppers say they’ve been able to stash cash away as a result of things like pandemic stimulus checks and money saved from less commuting and travel.

With big sales numbers predicted for this holiday season, retailers looking to seize the moment need to be on their toes when it comes to rolling with the punches of supply chain issues. With out-of-stock anxiety tearing through holiday shoppers’ this year, surveys reveal around 40% shopping in October, 60-70% via omnichannel and a new willingness to switch brands or retailers to get what they want. To help mitigate, retailers need to think about getting communications and promotions out early, and more on their social channels. In addition, creative and meaningful ways to take care of customers, and your workforce, will pay big dividends this year.
