What started out as me being annoyed with subscriptions may signal a change in how business works.
I've replaced most subscriptions with free, alternatives and moved to a pay-per-use model where possible.
I got fed up with the hoops proprietary software makes you go through. From hard-to-use interfaces, premium prices for essential features, and vendor lock-in, to training AI on your data.
But open source software is easy to use, free, customizable, and allows me to train AI on my data?
Enough is enough. The solution was to buy a server and research/install alternative software. But I can't be an IT admin all day, I need to run my businesses.
So I created CodyOS. A turn-key infrastructure configuration that installs, configures, and keeps updated, all the systems my business needs to run.
Since it's based on NixOS it's stable (for the last 21 years) and can replace Windows/Mac on desktop computers. I've used it for seven months and my wife for four months. She actually likes it!
I manage every aspect of two desktop computers and two servers from one code repo. But this easily scales up to thousands of machines and users.
This isn't something new, it's been done for years. It's tried and tested in production by FedEx, Shopify, and Target to name a few.
But I've laid the foundation to allow the system to grow with you, suggest automation, and change itself. The same customization will happen to websites and software.
Before "customized" meant a frozen snapshot of time. It would be perfect for a while, but you would be locked in and outgrow after 10-12 months.
Some people think they aren't good with technology, actually, technology isn't good with people. The time for general-purpose computing is ending and the era of customized-for-you solutions is here.
Who knows where this idea will end up or what my part will be. But I wanted to introduce you to the future.
