Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of justice.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, the last enslaved Black Americans learned they were free.

Today, we honor the generations who endured, resisted, and persevered, while reflecting on the work that continues to build a more equitable future for all.

As we commemorate Freedom Day, we celebrate Black history, Black culture, and the countless contributions of Black Detroiters who have helped shape our city and our nation.

What a shock to learn last night that our friend… everyone’s friend… publicist Matt “Mattie” Lee, died yesterday. He loved the music industry, and musicians loved him back. And the same holds true for members of the media and all of us in the PR profession. He was a good man and a proud, devoted father to his beautiful daughter. I saw him recently at a TV station and I asked about her. He told me twice how much that touched him. And I was beyond touched when I reached out to our mutual friend Jim McFarlin last night and he shared, “Matt always spoke so well of you. He really admired you and the business you built.” I’ve always been someone who focuses much more on camaraderie than competition, and Matt and I always supported one another’s successes. I will miss crossing paths with you at TV stations and events, Matt. Thank you for impacting our lives in the most positive ways. - Carolyn
