More than 60 years ago, psychologist Stanley Budner developed a self-report scale that attempted to measure a leader’s tolerance for ambiguity. This self-assessment remains popular and still provides a useful lens into how much tolerance for ambiguity a given leader has. 🌿A litany of research supports the idea that when workers are frequently connected to nature and the natural world, they enjoy a host of benefits that enhance their well-being.

🍁Humans evolved in close connection to nature, and the desire to connect with the natural world exists in nearly everyone. Leaders and workplaces that create opportunities for team members to commune with nature help to energize their workforce and diminish the burnout commonly experienced by team members in fast-paced organizations.

🌞Good leaders understand the power of nature and encourage team members to spend as much time outdoors as possible. They often hold meetings and off-sites in close proximity to natural wonders so that team members can avail themselves of nature between sessions.

🧠💡Leaders who carry hard but hidden truths about team members and colleagues recognize that how they raise or offer such feedback has a tremendous influence on how people receive it.

👉While they can be more direct with feedback that is either expected or within the realm of reasonableness, good leaders respect that truths that will surprise and contradict long-held views require a more subtle approach. They typically offer such truths more indirectly or gently so as not to set off alarm bells or prompt a fortress of defensiveness.

👍But the best leaders know something else. When people discover such truths for themselves, they internalize the feedback in a way no leader can replicate by telling or showing them.

🤔When it comes to carrying an uncomfortable truth, a more powerful approach is often to ask people to examine themselves with a provocative question. Some examples:

💬Why do you think others get quiet and shut down when you advocate for your views?
💭How does your reaction to disagreement differ from those of your colleagues?
💬What typically happens for you immediately after completing a project or assignment?
💭What possible reasons would your colleagues have for rejecting your promotion?
✍️Provocative questions that ask others to critically examine their views are best left to linger without the leader addressing them. If the team member wants to discuss, good leaders ask for time to think about their answers and request a future time to compare notes.

💡👉 Turning the tables on those who complain is more than just a clever strategy. Asking the critic to help you address the problem by providing clear and actionable steps requires them to own the problem with you.

🤔Saying, “Tell me exactly what I should do to correct this,” or “What steps do you advise for me to address this issue?” can turn a critic into a coach.

😘Whether you follow their recommendations is another matter, but by flipping the script and asking them to coach you through the problem they have raised, you weaken their resolve to simply complain in the future.

👍In essence, you teach them to be more thoughtful about how they offer general feedback and receive some practical advice in the process. Faced with your requests to guide you forward, they learn to stop offering broad criticisms and complaints and instead provide specific feedback.

🧠The short-term crowd is always too distracted to notice the long-term crowd slowly compounding.

👉An investor obsessing over daily economic data misses the big picture. A teenager chasing fleeting popularity neglects to develop genuine interests and skills. A co-worker stops paying attention to the details to chase attention. All chase false stimuli at the cost of lasting value.

💡Never try to win the moment at the expense of the decade.
