🌽 Corn Growers: Dicamba & "Greensnap" Risk 💨
If you’re wrapping up post emergence spraying, keep a close eye on the weather forecast before putting dicamba in the tank.
Dicamba works like a growth hormone. When corn takes it in, it causes the plant cells to stretch out incredibly fast. For about 7 to 14 days after spraying, this rapid growth makes the corn stalks temporarily brittle and fragile.
If a severe thunderstorm or high winds hit during that 1-to-2 week window, the corn can snap cleanly off near the ground—a disaster known as greensnap.
🔥 Note: Hot weather and good soil moisture right after spraying make the corn grow even faster, making the stalks even more brittle.
How to play it safe:
📅 Check the 10-day forecast: If high winds or storms are coming, hold off on spraying.
🌱 Spray early: Target small corn (V3 to V4 stage). If the corn is taller, use drop nozzles to keep the spray out of the whorl.
