Farming is more than a job. It's a way of life. But the pressures of weather, finances, markets and long hours can take a serious toll on mental health.

Research shows that farmers and agricultural workers face a significantly higher risk of su***de than the general population, with some estimates indicating rates are 3 to 3.5 times higher.

During Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, take a moment to check in with the farmers, farmworkers and family members in your life. Watch this video to learn some of the warning signs of stress and mental health struggles that may be especially common in farm families, and what you can do to support someone who may be struggling.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or having thoughts of su***de, call or text 988 anytime to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Trained counselors are available 24/7 to provide free, confidential support.

You are not alone. Help is always available.

Long before sustainable forestry became a common practice, Jim Horton, known as "Pine Tree Jim," was managing his Missouri woodlands with future generations in mind.

By selectively harvesting trees and replanting forests, he demonstrated how thoughtful stewardship can improve both forest health and productivity. His legacy continues today through the Horton family's commitment to conservation and woodland management.

Outdoor recreation is more than just fun in Missouri. It's a major economic driver.

In 2024, outdoor recreation contributed $10.67 billion to Missouri's economy and supported 90,600 jobs across industries including retail, manufacturing, hospitality and tourism. Missouri stands out nationally for its strong hunting economy, ranking among the top states for hunting participation and related spending.

Missouri's state parks also play an important role. Nearly 20 million visitors each year support local restaurants, shops, lodging and outdoor businesses. Visitor and household spending related to state parks is estimated to support 11,900 jobs and contribute $883 million to Missouri's GDP in 2025.

Labor Day marks the unofficial transition from summer to fall in the garden, making now the perfect time to start preparing for the next season. MU Extension horticulturist David Trinklein recommends focusing on a few key tasks to keep your garden productive and healthy.

◾Harvest late-season vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and squash.
◾Plant cool-season favorites like lettuce, spinach, kale, broccoli and radishes.
◾Divide overcrowded perennials, including hostas, irises and daylilies.
◾Seed or overseed cool-season lawns and fertilize established turf.
◾Begin fall cleanup by removing dead plant material that can harbor pests and diseases.

A little effort now can help set the stage for a healthier garden and landscape next spring.
