Shopify vs WooCommerce is the wrong argument. The right question is whether your product fits the box the platform gives you.

A florist client sells keepsakes made from preserved wedding flowers. Every order is configured — the customer picks components, and the price and the preview change as they go. On Shopify, that meant variant math that broke past a few options, apps stacked on apps, and a checkout that confused people right at the moment they were finally ready to buy.

We moved the store to WooCommerce and built the configurator ourselves. Not because Shopify is bad — it's excellent for a catalog of fixed products, and I recommend it regularly. It was just the wrong tool for a product that doesn't exist until the customer builds it.

If you're fighting your platform with plugins and workarounds, that's not a technical problem to solve. That's information. The workarounds are telling you something.

A website redesign isn't a sign that something failed. Everything gets reconfigured eventually.

Kitchens get moved because the family grew. Restaurants cut the fish nobody orders. Stores shift the register once they watch where people actually queue. Cities close streets to cars fifty years after widening them for cars. None of that is a mistake being corrected — it's the thing catching up to the people using it.

Websites work the same way. They're just newer, so owners take it personally, like the site is a report card.

It isn't. Your site was built for the business you had: the services you offered then, the customer you had then, the version of you still working out what actually sells. Four years on, the service that pays the bills is buried on page two, and the question every caller asks is answered in one paragraph on the About page.

The house is fine. The floor plan is from 2019.

So don't start with what's wrong with it. Start with what's changed about you since it was built, and move the walls to match. Sometimes that's a rebuild. More often it's putting the door where people are already trying to walk in.

A WordPress care plan sounds like insurance you'll never use, so here's a literal log of one client's month.

Core, theme and eleven plugins updated on a staging copy first, because updating live is how you find out your contact form is broken from a customer. Offsite backups verified — not "running," verified, meaning I restored one to confirm it works. Uptime monitored at one-minute intervals. Two malformed spam entries cleared from the form database. Database optimized, 40MB of overhead removed. Broken link scan, three fixed. Load time check on mobile.

Total: about ninety minutes.

Nothing dramatic happened. That's the entire product. You're not paying for the ninety minutes, you're paying for the Tuesday where your site doesn't go down mid-campaign and you never learn how close it came.

The plans that feel like a waste of money are the ones that are working.

Business texting for small business is the most underused channel I've set up this year, and both clients who tried it saw the same thing happen.

The math is stupidly simple. Email gets opened maybe one time in four, and that's if it clears the promotions tab. A text gets opened almost every time, usually within minutes. Same message, same customer, wildly different outcome — the only variable is where it landed.

A landscaping client uses it for scheduling confirmations and weather reschedules, which used to eat an hour of phone calls a day. A retail client uses it for order updates and restock alerts. Both reported more engagement and more sales inside the first month.

The catch nobody mentions: you need proper consent handling and a compliant registration or carriers will filter you into oblivion. That's the part that actually takes work, and it's the part most people skip right before wondering why their texts aren't arriving.

Running a web design agency alone means nobody assigns you anything.

No one tells me which client needs attention first. No one notices if I skip the boring maintenance pass, or if I ship a page at 80% instead of finished. There is no one to be accountable to except the person who has to answer the phone when something breaks.

That sounds like freedom and it's mostly just weight. The upside is that when a client emails on a Saturday, there's no ticket queue, no account manager, no "let me check with the team." There's me, and I already know their site.

Six years in, the thing I'm most proud of isn't a build. It's that I've never needed to be chased. I find the thing, I do the thing, I close the loop.

That's the whole job description. Everything else is Elementor.

Most service business homepages lose the visitor in the first eight seconds, and it's almost always the same three things.

One: the headline says what you are, not what you do for them. "Premium Landscaping Solutions" is a category. "Your yard, handled, on a schedule you never think about" is an offer.

Two: no proof above the fold. Not a badge — proof. A number, a result, a real customer's words. Trust gets decided before the scroll, not in the testimonial section nobody reaches.

Three: one CTA doing four jobs. "Contact us" asks a stranger who found you 20 seconds ago to commit like a warm referral. Give the ready buyer a call button and the researcher something lower-stakes to click. Two paths, not one door.

None of this is a redesign. It's a headline, a stat, and a second button. Fix those and the same traffic converts better this week.

A custom WordPress plugin usually starts as a problem nobody sells a fix for.

A florist client needed customers to build a keepsake piece online — choose the flowers, the frame, the layout — and see the price change as they went. Every off-the-shelf product builder we tried either couldn't do it or turned checkout into a maze. So we built it.

Then something happened that we didn't plan for. Another client needed a version of it. Then a third asked for something adjacent. The thing we made once to solve one specific headache turned out to be a headache four other businesses had too.

That's now a product line. Anti-spam form validation, guest guides for rentals, SMS consent, the configurator — every single one started as "we can't buy this, so let's make it."

The unglamorous truth about custom development: the best products aren't invented, they're noticed.
