Fr. Jerry O'Donnell (retired) offered these powerful words ten years ago, and they have never been more true:
"I'm constantly being kidded by people who've taken a short vacation or a long vacation from church that the roof would fall in if they've ever come back! Let me tell you that that has never happened, and probably never will. But if it's been a while since you've been to this church or any church, I want you to forget about that, because you belong here... because you belong to the body of Christ. Christ died for your sins and mine, too. The past about which you're ashamed, it doesn't matter. We're all sinners. That's why Christ died. He died for sinners.
I once read that you can either define the church as a hotel for saints or a hospital for sinners. And if it were a hotel for saints, our churches would be empty.
So whatever your past, I just invite you to to come back and give us a try. Put your foot in the door. If you have been hurt by the church in the past, I apologize on behalf of the church. But then the church is made up of flawed human beings just like me... just like you. If you are uncomfortable about the thought of having to stand and sit, and whatever, sit in the back, follow what everybody else is doing. There's nothing magic about the words or the actions. It's what's in your heart.
So check out the mass times either of this church or of the church that's close to you. Find one that meets your schedule and give it a try. I pray that you will feel at home once more in your Catholic church."
